RuddyDuck
Do you guys think that in certain lakes Bullheads make up a good part of a Bass's forage? Just wondering if this is what I am imitating when using dark colored jigs and plastics in certain lakes. Most of these lakes are shallower and not too clear. Thanks for your input. Craigums
Absolutely, Ive caught a few fish with bullhead tails sticking out of their throats. Always on small shallow lakes, and dark colors always worked best for me on those lakes
Hester
I was out with Smalliehunter one day and I had a bass that spit up an 8" bullhead when I was trying to measure the fish. I believe the bass went 5 1/2 pounds. I'll try to find the pic of the bullhead and post it.
EBass
Yup they even eat small pike. I caught a 21" years ago at my buddy's cabin and barely sticking out of the throat was some small pike lips. It ate said pike tail first! I guess that's why we have trebles on the back of crankbaits
06reata
The first trip I took my son up there (he was 7) I let him pick out a new lure to take before we left. He picked out a baby blues eyes which is suppose to represent a baby bullhead. The lure came with one jig head and three bodies. He ended up catching four to my one the entire time. I preyed that a pike would not bite him off because he only had that one lure and my prayer was answered. He had a blast and I was happy because he was having fun which meant more time on the water for me....which was only 4-5 hours a day but better than I thought it would be...mostly because the motel we stayed at had a swimming pool. When we got back home he wanted to go to that store and buy all of the baby blues eyes that were on the shelf so it would be his secret only. I tried to discourage him from buying that lure due to the exposed hook and not wanting to deal with him getting snagged but he insisted...I'm glad he did. I now have a few of those in my tackle box but never really had much luck the way he did.
Deitz Dittrich
I talked to a fisheries biologist a few years back.. and he stated that for most major predatory fish(bass, muskie, northern.) that Bullhead was one of the main forage.. Because they are full of fat, and are quite slow and easy to ambush.
RK
Bass - or any other predator - eat what's abundant and available. If that's bullys, you can bet the eat them.
