Eyeguy, if using evaluative metering, the background density and the amount of background in the shot has a lot to do with how you expose the shot. If the bird would have taken up over half the frame, I probably wouldn't have had to compensate at all because the lighter bg coupled with the dark bird would have probably averaged to a normal exposure. Also, if the bg would have been pine trees, I'd have had to go to a minus on the dial due to the overall darkness of the shot.
