Dozer
Im almost done building my frame and trying to figure out what to coat it with. Ive got a pair of quotes for $400 to powder coat it, but that seems like alot. Has anybody else had good results with anything else? Rhino liner, Hurculiner, some sort of paint? I have a spray gun and dont mind doing it myself if there is a good product out there that is durable.
gunner55
We have used Herculiner on a smaller trailer, brushed on,of ours & it worked well.A little spendy but L&M had it on sale & no more rust.
frostbite
I used chassis saver paint to re do my frame it's been 2 years and still looks good but it needs a little rust to stick to so i dont know if it will work on a new frame? ,took about 3/4 gal to do a 6.5 x14
Hawg
Check out the POR 15 HSOforum, the videos are very informative on prep and usage. That's what I'm going to use after doing a ton of research. I think either Rhino liner,or a comparable product, and POR 15 are the the one most people are happy with.
JSK76
I would go with the power coat for 400.00. I'm an auto body painter and think if you metal prime and coat it with a truck bed liner like I did using quality products that will last like por15 and Raptor liner you will be close to the 400.00 mark and I don't think it will be as long lasting as the power coat. You didn't say the size of the frame but unless its 6x8 I think it will be cheaper to go with powder coat.
Hawg
3 quarts of POR and the prep to do it(the prep is spray on etcher that is in place of primer) was around $160. $400 seems very cheap to powder a whole frame so give it strong consideration. My only thought is when you start with $150 extra here and $150 there on building is that these things get a lot more expensive than they need to be. I know a lot of guys, and I HOPE I don't become one, that sit in the house on the ice and say "I probably didn't need this or that".
Wes Ellis
I put Herculiner on my frame. I think the frame flexes to much. keepe flaking off. I would do the power coat for that price. I boght a special cleaner and all the time I think it would be worth it.
Hawg
But powder coat can't take any flexing I thought. It's very hard and brittle, wouldn't that be an argument against it?
Dozer
I have thought about POR but it is suppose to be top coated as it fades if exposed to UV according to the manufacture. I have also considered Herculiner but Ive never been real impressed this all the knock off "Rhino liners". Are you sure the frame flexing is causing the hurculiner to flake off? Seems to me if your frame is flexing that much you would have bigger problems to worry about!I also talked to a guy that owns a sandblasting/industrial painting company who told me it will cost upwards of $250 in materials to paint it with anything comparable to the durability of powder coat. Gordie
Dozer 400.00 is a good price but does that include sandblasting? Most powder coat painters want steel to be sandblasted so the powder coating has some good to stick to.My brother did a frame with Hercu-liner several years ago and it still looks great. At any rate I would have the frame sandblasted as it gives a great base for any top coat something to stick to. Dozer
No I does not include blasting, thats another $200 if I have them do it. Im going to blast it myself though no matter what I coat it with.Im really leaning to just getting it powder coated, seems like it would be better to spend a little more now than have to redo it in a couple years. tisosy11
Does anyone in the metro area coat frames of existing houses? I'd like to take mine in and get it taken care of this summer before the next season.

tisosy11
Not powder coat obviously. Just looking for someone to either blast and paint or put on a rhino coat.
Hawg
I jumped the gun. I ordered POR 15 and then found out my frame is red primer, POR 15 has to be bare metal to bond. DARN!!! Seems weird the stuff sticks to rust but not fresh primer.
fishingmadman
Just a suggestion I went to Menards and bought 5 cans of their undercoating roughly $5 a can cleaned the trailer with a wire brush and sprayed on not a problem and I use my trailer strickly in the winter
Dozer
I bought and tried about 5 differnt kinds of paint and beadliner and tried each of them of different pieces of metal. Seems like all of the bed liners dont really stick very well. I decided to go for the POR15 and topcoated the outer portion with their "Blackcoat". Sure looks nice now and seems really durable. Hawg
Dozer, did you go over primed steel or strip it? It was a new frame right?
Dozer
Yes mine was a new frame. No primer, I used the POR15 "Marine Prep" followed by the "Prep & Ready". Basicly the Marine Prep is just a degreaser. Im not really sure what the Prep & Ready is but it smells and burns your eyes and skin like acid for cleaning aluminum wheels. Smoker
I went to a place that sells auto paint. I wipped the metal down first and then primed it with industrial primer. It needed to be top coated within 24 hours. I put the bed Raptor bed linner on top of that and it is holding up great.
axman
Welle auto supply carries POR 15 in store in Minneapolis for sure
