Spring gobbler dispersal?

I'm getting the itch and called a landowner who let me hunt last spring. He said he had a group of 12 tom's by his house most of the winter and now there's only 4 of them that are coming in regularly. I'm assuming they're starting to break up and find their own territories.

He said he saw a bunch of turkeys last fall, but hasn't seen any hens all winter.

I'm wondering how far the tom's will disperse from this area. This is in Wadena County. I'd say the woods/fields ration is close to 50/50.

Any thoughts?

They'll move a long way from their wintering areas to their spring breeding territories. I'd be surprised if that's happening yet. They're still in winter survival mode around the metro area. Mostly they're in the cattle feedlots right now.

There's a big flock of well over a hundred birds about a mile from where I hunt. I'm certain some of these birds will be on my turf once the snow is mostly gone. They'll move a lot farther than that if they need too to find food in the winter.

At my aunt and uncle's house in the Black Hills they have a lot of turkeys that come to their bird feeders. Before hunting season starts they start to disperse just like you describe. What I usually notice is that the flocks in the area each have a handful of gobblers instead of one big winter gobbler flock. So I think if your friend has a similar large number of turkeys in the area, you'll find a few of those dozen gobblers with each flock of hens. Maybe only a couple dominant birds per flock of hens, and then the lesser gobblers will try to go between the flocks to steal hens.

Has your friend seen any hens at his house? Maybe the winter hen flock has spent the winter on another property. If he is friendly with the neighbors it might be worth while to make some phone calls to try to figure out where the other groups have been roosting and feeding during the winter.

He hasn't seen any hens all winter, but said there were lots of them around last fall. I'm thinking they can't be too far away.

The toms have been hanging w/ his cattle and also eating out of his bird feeder.

The people I stay with won't be home till mid April, so then I'll get some scouting reports.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
