Final Deer Harvest Report 2012

Check it out on the Dnr HSOforum...acorrding to the report...there were 500 permits for 264...it shows "none" were qualified for the regular firearms season, as a matter of fact, 264 doesn't even show up on that grid, and only about 6 for the muzzy season...is there even any legitimancecy to these reports? or was it a clerical error?

I'm starting to believe there is not. Not just from reviewing this years, but from reviewing them for the last several years. I really am starting to believe they tweak the numbers to represent their agenda.

They forgot to put some of the information for Z-264 in!! It is obviously a conspiricy! They are trying to illiminate Z-264!

I like reading the reports, but when they leave out some of the info for my main zone...it's just not as much fun! It was obviously a clerical error...hopefully they catch it and fix it.

Looks like the buck harvest is at the same % give or take in zone 3. Good to see that the same amount of bucks are taken but they are just a little bigger now, so more meat for the freezer!

We went from "hunters choice in 2011" to "lottery" in 2012 in Z-264....

The overall harvest was within 7 animals...the antlerless harvest was down, 48%...(-267 animals from 2011)....the buck harvest was up 51%...(+260 animals from 2011), there were 500 antlerless permits available for firearms and muzzy...and 11 of the 267 antlerless were taken by archery...Interesting how the switch from "any deer" to Lottery antlerless or a buck tag at your disposal can so dramaticly change the make up of the harvest.

That's cool data! Would be neat if the report had each line colored to correspond with the deer map, one color for lottery, one color for h.c, etc.. And a summary for each kind of a area; lotto, hc, managed, intensive. And if anyone really had some time it would be good to show the buck kill:doe kill ratio in zone 3 vs the rest of the state.

If you take some time and a calculator to the report you can figure that out...But the big difference is really within switching from, hunters choice or managed to lottery...if you go from intensive to one, or two deer in the aformentioned...it isn't that big of a change as the average deer per hunter in an "intensive" ,(5 deer area), is still just a bit over 2 per hunter...And, as far as the "colored" maps...they should be posted soon as they have for all the previous years....

I took the time last year. It was interesting stuff.

And I wasn't talking about colored maps, rather use the same colors from the map and highlight the rows on the spreadsheet with the same colors. Suppose the folks in control can just separate the data between lotto, hc, man, int, with just a few clicks of the button, too. No real point in doing it, just would be neat to see the difference in data between different kinds of areas.

I would be very nervous if I was one of the six individuals that registered deer in zone 287 with archery equipment.

Archery hunting is not allowed in that zone !! I heard the DNR is going out and investigating the individuals. That could ruin someone's day.

Did it mention the wolves harvest ? 66,500 deer hauled down on the low end according to MN research or 84,000 on the high end if you figure 3,500 wolves in the state. That's a lot of venison. If each deer weighed 150 pounds on the hoof that's 12.6 million pounds lol. Can't wait for Easter to get the Ottertail county wolf reports. I know my uncles got rifles loaded for this calving season, first 4 calves of the year are dead, not wolf related, and 3 cows, they can't stack up losses like that and they sure aren't going to let wolves do whatever until the federal guy gets brought in. They've disposed of 49 coyotes up to date Sunday. That saved a few fawns already. The fox thanks for those charts. ................The Buck

Intensive deer areas. If you hunt an intensive deer area, you may take a deer of either sex or you may hunt bucks throughout your selected season. No application for an either-sex permit is necessary. In the following areas, firearm, archery, and muzzleloader hunters may take a deer of either sex on their regular license and purchase bonus permits to take antlerless deer.

Of course there are things That contradict each other its the DNR. Check out page 90 of 2012 hunting and trapping regulations for one of many examples.Read the green box.

Open areas: archery hunters can hunt statewide except in areas designated closed and Itasca state park (deer area 287).

I see...so, you're saying "all of" Z 287 is "State Park" land...I'm not familiar with the boundries of the park but if that is the case...then where it says "Itasca State Park" on the 2012 deer season map...(to the left of Z 287)...that is in Z 184...a lottery area in 2012...And on page 85 it says it is open for firearms...on page 90, as you said, it says...

"Archery hunters can hunt statewide except in areas designated closed and Itasca State Park (deer area 287)."Does this mean the park lies entirely within 287, or just part of the park is in that zone?

So you're telling us that all of 287 is entirely within the Itasca State Park...My question is, if the park is on the deer area map where it shows it...it is at least partialy in 184...add that more, or the rest of the park, is in 287...that lies just east of the SW most portion of 184...now the park lies partially or totaly within two separate permit area's...Why aren't they "thinking"????

No, not entirely...I just got done looking at the map of Itasca on the DNR HSOforum...there is quite a bit of private land, according to the map, on the north side of the state park that lies south of hwy 200 and north of the "park" lands...there are aslo some much smaller parcels of private land within 287 but north of the southern boundry...hwy 113. The park does entail "most" of Z-287, but not all of it...

I think the data for Youth Rifle License Sales is kind of interesting.

62,949 sold in 2012

That is either one huge amount of good recruitment of our young people!

Or a lot of Dad's have figured out how to have an extra tag for the year?

I'm not saying you may not be correct...I'm not familiar with the area so I've just been looking at the boundry maps on the DNR HSOforum...It appears that hwy200, hwy71, hwy113 are the N - E - S boundries of the Zone 287...but it is unclear where the Western boundry is...on the DNR permit area map it shows Zone 184's SW most boundry as the White Earth Reservation line...however, on the Itasca State Park Map it shows, the Park's Western boundry as the White Earth line...So, you are from the area, can you tell us is part of 184 in the Park as well? And is Zone 297 boundries described as "the park" or do the boundries include highways or other roads?
