If im fishing and only running my trolling motor, is it legal for me to have a loaded shotgun in the boat to shoot at some ducks? Or if im just sitting in the boat and its not running?
Thanks for your help.

I must correct my first response after checking the regs.

From the handbook: Waterfowl may be takenfrom a floating watercraft that is drifting, beached, moored.resting at anchor,or is bieng propelled by paddle, oars or pole.

The weapon must be unloaded and cased if your under power by any type of motor.
If your waiting for a wounded duck to surface you must be completely stoped.
Now as far as under drift, that one could be legal. As you can drift and jump shoot rivers, you just can not have a loaded uncased gun while under any type of motor power.

we got stopped by a warden last year at weaver doing that exact thing!! we were using an electric trolling motor on a canoe and were just creeping along fishing. we had our guns uncased and loaded on the floor of the canoe. the warden pulled up and explained that what we were doing was VERY ILLEGAL. even if it's just an electric trolling motor, your gun must be case when it is on. he said that if we were just paddleing we would be fine, but not with a motor going. luckly he was nice enough to let us off with a warning. we ended up just paddleing around the rest of the time and actaully shot a few ducks that day.

Duckj,

I'll be up on Cass starting today for fishing eyes and a bit of duck and grouse hunting. I'm staying at the Birch Villa resort, cabin #11. Otherwise I'll be in a beat up blue lund predator with a 60 hp merc tiller. If you see me stop by and say hello.

Here is a clip from the regs. You cannot hunt from the boat unless you are somewhat blinded, i.e. you cannot be shooting non-crippled birds from a boat that is floating or anchored in open water.

Taking in Open Water
A person may not take migratory waterfowl, coots, or rails in open
water unless that person is:
a) within a natural growth of vegetation sufficient to partially
conceal the person or boat, or
B) pursuing or shooting wounded birds (while in compliance
with the watercraft restrictions listed below).
Watercraft
• A person using watercraft to take migratory waterfowl must comply
with the provisions for “Taking in Open Water” specified above.
• Migratory waterfowl may be taken from a floating watercraft if
the craft is drifting, beached, moored, resting at anchor, or is
being propelled by paddle, oars, or pole.
• Migratory waterfowl may be taken from a watercraft propelled by
motor or sails only if the motor is shut off and the sails are furled
and the watercraft has stopped.
• A person may not transport any firearm in a boat or other
watercraft being propelled by motor or sail unless the firearm is
unloaded and contained in a case. (See pages 24-26 for complete
arms restrictions.)

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
