Head gasket question

Recommended Posts

'95 Silverado... a few days ago my antifreeze ended up in my crankcase. Is there any way to tell if it's the head gasket that went out, or if the head is cracked before tearing into it? If it's just the head gasket it might be worth fixing, if it's the heads I'll probably look for a different truck.

Far as I know you have to pull the heads and have them magna fluxed to check for cracks unless it is visible with the naked eye. I would also suggest doing this even if you are only replacing the head gaskets anyways as it is the peace of mind that is needed. Nothing worse than going through all of that work to replace the head gaskets then find out there is a crack in one of the heads.

How much money can you put into a 95 Silverado and have it make sense? How much did you drive with the antifreeze in the oil, and how do you know that is all? What is it going to cost to put a guaranteed used motor in the rig?

My daughter's Gran Prix started eating antifreeze, she put maybe 100 miles on it with the problem. When the valve covers were pulled the whole thing looked like it had butterscotch poured on it. Maybe that's all you need to do, pull the valve covers. Motor guys - if you find butterscotch is it time to replace?

The local high school automotive class is tearing it apart for me.... I won't have money tied up in labor to figure out just how big of a problem this is, but I expect it to take a bit longer than it would at a shop of course, as they can only work on it for a limited amount of time in a day. This was a great option for me, and the class was happy to tear into it.

Oh yeah, I remember those days. Happy to tear it apart and then it sits there until the last day of school and nobody knows where half the parts are! LOL

I hope it doesn't go like that for you!

Ha! Yeah, I know what you mean, my shop class all those years ago was somewhat like that at times. There is always a couple of guys though, (you were probably one of them) that get it all done for everybody.

I know the teacher, and those are the guys he has working on it. The class has taken on some bigger projects for others over the years, and the teacher keeps them on task pretty well.

I didn't have it in my budget to take it somewhere else right now, nor did I have the time to do it myself, so I'll take it as it comes.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
