Turkey Choke Question

Lane

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

New to the turkey game. I was able to bag one last year, but I am by no means fully vested in turkey knowlege.

My father in law bought me a turkey choke for Xmas this year. (Cool gift!)

Question is; the choke says "No Steel Shot."

If I hunt public land in MN where I can't use lead...what can I use?

Depends on the type of public lands you're hunting. You can use lead shot on most state lands like WMAs. The only lands that are non-tox only are federal lands like WPAs. Some state lands do have special restrictions, but as a general rule, WMAs allow lead.

Other options would be things like hevishot or similar non-lead options.

The bismuth shot loads are pretty soft and are nontoxic. The hevishot loads are harder than steel so they are out with that choke. The Winchester elite loads are softer than steel but harder than lead. Also Winchester is not producing these anymore so what is on the shelves is it.

The Federal Cartridge high density loads are non toxic and generally perform well in Modified to full chokes rated for steel.

I think Powerstroke hit it on the head. Just an issue in Waterfowl Production Areas. (WPA) Most all other public lands allow lead.

I think if you buy some high quality Copper Plated Turkey Loads for that new choke tube, you'll be good to go most anywhere.
