cps420us
Had the hook snap off on a 4mm tungsten jig yesterday right below the tungsten body. Is this a common problem for those jigs? I've read its because of the higher heat needed to make them, but one would think for the price of them a little better quality would go into them. stealth3350
I ALLSO HAVE BROKE A FEW THIS WINTER
bassinboy3
I broke off two hooks in one outing with these jigs and havent tied one on since, they seemed to be fine when just using them for panfish but if you hook a bass or a pike during that process they will snap. I have heard if you call them and talk to them they will send you new ones. I just chose to not use them again. As you said you would expect better qaulity for the price point. Scott M
This was/is an issue...I'm no welder/solderer but I think the tungsten to hook adhesion process weakens the hook. They have some poor hook angles out of the packages and I've tried to bend a few only to break them.
Northlander
Ya I had a bunch of them break off as well so I dont even use what I have left. Not worth losing a big fish over.Anybody got that #? I may have them replace them all with something else.
OnAFly
I had this problem with the 1 northland tungsten jig I bought. The hook was too thin to begin with, so if you hooked a fish good, it would bend when taking it out. Then eventually it just broke. Best I've used to far has been the Skandia jigs. NCLaker
Interesting you mention this about Fiskas/Wolfram jigs, few weeks ago I broke 2 (brother-in-law broke one of mine) in the same day of may favorite color. Thought it was odd, just figured I was being a little rough trying to get it out of tough hooked blue gill. Broke another last season.Didn't think much of it until I saw this post ... I have since been look to try more Custom Jig & Spin's new Tungston jigs to see if the hooks & paint are more durable.
OnAFly
Paint isn't, I had one get loose in my jig box and it got all chipped up. That was even after applying a clear coat of nail polish to it in the pre-season. Still, the best I've found have been Skandias. But, you do have to clear coat them for better paint durability. I'm fine with that as I haven't has a single problem with the hooks, which would be a much bigger deal.
NCLaker
Thanks OnAFly, Skandias look interesting - I like that they have a tungsen version of the "gill pill", I'll have to give that a try.Unfortunately they don't have a longer shanked option like the Cust Jig/Spin Majmun, I use that for small plastics. dan z
I bought some on the online bidding site and the seller had no issues sending me replacements. I like these jigs.
pathogen
I've had a few break. Tungsten has a super high melting point and I think when it is cast with the hook embedded, it takes the temper out of the steel hook and leaves it brittle..... IcePro
Of course when use jigs with thin wire hooks they are going to break. I only have a problem after catching several fish. If you use a forceps to remove the hook there is less stress on the hook and prevents addition bending of the hook.I feel thin wire hooks allow you to barely hook the Euro Larva on the hook and gives you a better hooking percentage catching fish.If you want a more durable hook use a forged hook, however I will stay with my Fiskas
