Transmission Questions

Recommended Posts

Quick question I have heard both sides and agree with both sides from co-workers but would like your question I am due to change my tranny fluid is it better to flush and put new in or drop it clean the pan and put new in. I have heard the downs of flushing is it brings all the "nasty" stuff on the bottom of the pan back into play. The disadvantage of just draining is your not getting 100% of the old fluid. I have a place that will do one and another that will do the other.

Thoughts please?

I personally will not flush a transmission. (other than disconnecting a line and adding fluid while running it) Dropping the pan, changing the filter and gasket has far less chance of creating a problem than a flushing machine does. If there is that much debris in the remaining fluid on a standard fluid and filter change, than I'd say you have bigger problems to worry about. 2c

Mac, that is how I do it. I just pull the pan, change filter, then pull a line, aim it into a bucket, start it, and add fluid until the fluid looks clean.

+2, or would that be +3?

Even if you don't blow out all the old fluid, if you change on a decent schedule, just dropping the pan, changing the filter, and topping off with new, the transmission probably will outlive most of the rest of the vehicle.

The single hest thing is to add a cooler, or maybe a bigger one, if not already equipped.

Thanks guys, Thats what I was looking to do number one the place that will just drop the pan and add new tranny fluid is a lot cheaper and I had this conversation with my co-worker and it sounded like all your comments. I have never done this before and since it is winter I am not sure I want to tackle it as my garage is small and truck doesnt even fit into it. How much does it typically cost to do it yourslef and how hard is it? I think the place I called said about 120?

It's not hard if you can get under the vehicle easily. Also, if the tranny pan has a drain plug it's easier, or at least tends to be less messy.

If the tranny doesn't have a drain plug then you'll want to loosen the bolts in such a manner as to incrementally lower one corner of the pan to allow as much fluid to drain out as possible. If you try to drop the whole pan at once you're probably going to make a really big mess.

It's also nice to keep track of/measure how much came out so you have a good idea how much goes back in for starters.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
