Buying a used vehicle question...

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am looking at buying a used vehicle for my wife. We are in MN this vehicle is located in SD. My question comes in how does it work when you buy this vehicle. I will need a loan on it so I am not sure how all that works with giving the check to the person I am buying it from. Also how does it work with insurance as well as MN registering the vehicle. Can we drive it home or is that illegal?

if your buying a car from someone in SD, they will need to go to http://www.sdcars.org/ and fill out the sellers permit etc

Quote:
Seller’s Permits

A seller’s permit can be obtained by a private seller at anytime before the sale of the vehicle. The permit will allow a buyer to drive during the interval between purchase and registration for a period of 30 days or upon registration, whichever comes first.

The permit is valid for no longer than 30 days from the date of sale and is issued free of charge.

Only one permit per vehicle is allowed to be done on-line, additional permits must be obtained from your county treasurer’s office.

On-line reprint is available on the day of issue.

Only 10 permits are allowed per on-line visit.

Once the vehicle is sold you must file a Report of Sale. This can be done online by clicking the "Sold" plate.

they just enter in the vin etc on that page and then print out the form and your all set. The seller will also keep the license plates as well as we just transfer our to our next vehicle here in SD.

you will take the piece of paper that the seller can print out from that site I posted above.

The paper printout will look very similar to what a dealer sticker would like if you bought from a dealer. Just stick it in the window just like the instructions say.

It wouldn't hurt to draft up a bill of sale etc and have both parties sign it and take all of that with you to your MN DMV
