Vexilars

I just have a question regarding the opinion of many of you vexilar owners. I've been doing some research on various flashers manly the fl18, fl20, and fl22.

My question is the fl22hd really worth the extra money compared to the fl18 and fl20?

It seems to me that the main reason for buying the fl22hd is the allegedly superior resolution you will get. But I have owned a fl18 for a year now and I think the resolution is just fine.

So all in all is the fl22hd really all that great? I would really appreciate the input and opinions of owners of all flasher owners.

Thanks a lot and good luck fishing.

Coleman, there is a big difference between the displays from the FL-18 and FL-20. With the FL-22 you then have 10 ft ranges that allow it be more precise. The flat screen on the 20 and 22 makes it easier to see and won't fill up with snow, water and ice. They all work with the idea of showing the fish and your jig but as you move up to the 20 and 22 the display just makes what you seeing a lot easier to interput.

My buddy has the FL22 and I have the FL18. I'm jealous, but I don't need to replace the 18 just yet ($$$). It works great, but yeah he has more bells and whistles and the sweet HD display, plus he can dim it at night. I need an auger, and 4 wheeler/trailer before I upgrade my Vexi.

I would not spend the money. The greatest feature Vexilar has come out with is the split screen zoom. They all have it. They are all different and yet they are all the same. If you can operate one, you can operate them all. Unless you have a very fat wallet, be happy with what you have. You will go broke if you are constantly upgrading perfectly good equipment just so you have the latest & greatest.

I run the fl-20 and my buddy has the fl-22hd. They are very close but the 10 ft scales set them apart. being able to see the most of the screen as you can is key to definition and separation. I had a 18 and would use one again in a minute. I like that there is no glare on the screen especially for open water. Plus the bottom lock feature on the 22 and 18 are nice for the boat.

If I had the dollars I would get an ice 55 I love the digital display. My brother one and if he isn't along I use it when running hole the auto depth is really nice when fishing breaks.

Yes my fl-18 still catches fish!

I have posted this before, but I have had a Ice 55 and other then all the flashy lights, no 2 sided zoom and that it sucked up battery power. I sold it and went back to my bullet proof FL-18 which takes a lot of rough rides in the sled and can run all weekend on a charge and has a 2 sided zoom. wink

I run a fl12 and like the flat screen and bigger screen compared to a FL8. For the average guy they all do the same thing just a little different. This year I am going with a Lowrance Elite 5 ice pack. Figure it as all of the features of a flasher plus built in internal GPS with lake maps. I do not think I'll be disappointed. Any unit beats the heck out of no unit but I don't think a gps mapping unit can be beat.

Im sure the FL18 is dandy and all. But there are pros and cons that one can weigh in with an Ice55:

1. Battery life drain can be defeated with an extra battery if needed. (most people rarely fish beyond a typical day unless on a ice fishing trip, hence being prepared)

2. Zoom feature of the Ice55 is more advanced then the FL18 allowing you to dial in a specific water column without being limited to a lock down at 6ft off bottom. So for instance your in 30 fow and crappies are suspended in 18-23 fow you dial your zoom into that 18-23 fow window and still be able to see the whole 30 fow water column on the same whole dial screen. With the FL18 your stuck on the 6ft bottom zoom and watching a useless split zoom window where the fish arent suspended or present.

3. 6 Color pallette allows you to adjust to fish movement behavior and size of fish, Auto depth feature locks in area of depth with a easy readable digital scale without straining your eyes trying to read the imprinted circle dial with all the colored marked lines on a Vexilar.

As far as choosing a Vexilar model flasher my choice would be the FL20 for versatility. The FL22's greatest feat is having a 10ft window.

I have the FL20. Love it. Really like the zoom. I mainly fish in 8 to 35 FOW.

*My only issue is interference when fishing with my buddy. He has a Marcum. I am looking at changing out the ducer this year, so maybe that will help.

You cannot go wrong with either FL-20 or FL-22...

Main thing is: If you mainly fish in water 60ft or less, go FL-22... If you mainly fish in deeper water than 60ft, go FL-20...

You could fish in deep water with FL-22 but keep in mind, your flasher wont show anything below the 60ft mark...
