I can admit it

Recommended Posts

I can admit I am getting my butt kicked! I trap as part of my living and as I said before it’s a great life but a horrible living.

I have five rats compared to last year’s two truck loads, one mink, few yotes, one little otter, one red fox and a handful of raccoons. This date last year I was making my second trip to the buyer as the freezers where full again. This year I put in another huge chest freezer to accommodate the in round fur yet I could fit everything but the coyotes in my stand up freezer in the house, since it is empty and out of groceries. I haven’t even taken the stretchers down out of the rafters yet.

I can’t figure it out but nothing around. 31 miles of ATV trap line and a little over 200 sets out and all I am doing is burning gas. The one track I crossed in the snow was a red fox and the first set he came to he was caught.

How are the rest of the trappers doing? Bang or bust?

You must have caught everything last year. How is the grouse population over thataway?

I'm hitting par but I don't run near the trapline you do. Agree with the lack of rats. Everything here is bone dry. Little or no water in any of them. Have not heard of other guys having much luck with mink and rats.

Coons and skunks are EVERYWHERE tho. I've lived here since 95 and have never seen this many skunks.

Not as many rats here as last year but still enough to keep me busy skinning. Had out over 50 traps and averaged about 30 a day so about 150 rats. Had a conibear sprung in fairly deep water near a bridge, someone had thrown several baseball sized rocks at it to spring it, decided to pull that one rather than lose it.

Agreed! I've never seen a raccoon on our hunting/gardening property before, but this year (making an assumption here, since they seem the likely culprits) raccoons did some damage to our corn, and I've seen raccoons on three separate occasions while walking to set up my deer stand. The population definitely seems up.

I'm hoping to get one by bow/arrow if I'm ever within range.

Its been slow here to Jonny. Not much of anything around. I am just trying to pay for gas this year. LOL. My time must be worth nothing.

No doubt! I picked up a yotes this morning and then had my heart broke. Nice otter sprung a coni last night, my water line is checked after the land line giving the eagle enough time to pretty much skin the otter for me.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
