garmin vs cell phone

Recommended Posts

ok i am not good with technology so i have no clue on how to work any gps

this will be my 1st

my brother inlaw has a fancy cell phone and it has a gps on it

i was telling him i was thinking about getting a garmin gps

eather a 62 or a montana to use for fishing and hunting

he said i would be better off getting a phone like his

well i honestly dont like to spend 100+ on a cell phone bill

every month i am very happy with my straight talk pe paid

so i am leaning towards a garmin or woild it be chgeaper to buy a smartphone or something like it and use the gps off that? i will be useing it on the ice and water in my boat might even take it on my atv

and hunting it will see alot of use so batt life is a concern but most important i want a good long lasting gps

any thoughts or suggestions?

Don't let anyone talk you into a smart phone unless you really want one, I have the Droid Razr X and although I like most of it's features it is a pain in the neck. At least my lowrance GPS runs on just 2 AA batteries unlike my sealed battery cell phone.

The GPS is going to have a longer battery life than the phone and will also hold up better to the elements. My Galaxy S2 sucks up batteries when I'm using the GPS and I wouldn't want to use it in the rain and snow.

If you don't want to use any of the other features a smart phone has to offer then just go get a stand alone GPS unit. It will have longer battery life, tolerate adverse weather conditions better, and will be more durable.

The initial cost of each device is likely to be similar as well depending on what GPS you go with and what phone/plan you'd go with. The big savings is in the fact that the GPS will not require an expensive monthly data plan.

The only time a smart phone is better than the GPS is when you already own the phone and can just tap into the GPS feature instead of buying a seperate GPS.
