Lol! Thats great anybody can get a ballistic table and then aim at the clouds so your gun is 2' high at a hundred yards and on paper it should rainbow in the bull @ 1000yds ....good luck hitting anything in between just have to hope everything you shoot at is 1000... I have a 30-378 with better ballistic than listed above and wouldn't attempt that kind of shot, at that range every little wind/weather hickup, effects that shot, clearly your a better shot than me...

When did the holier than thou club show up at FM?

Didn't any of you guys grow up doing deer drives?

I can remember going through a box if shells a day! LOL

I prefer stand hunting myself, but there is nothing wrong with a safe and well executed deer drive......

I'm glad someone else agrees with me! I know I'm not the only one.I have used many shots on drives too. I listened especially carefully to shots in my area this weekend and about 50% shot more than once. I hunt an area that is very thick and a high wolf population. People would rather put it down quickly than have the wolves track it for them. I did shoot 2 this weekend but only used 3 shots. grin

You are missing the point.

You obviously have not had any training in the art of long range shooting. The point of setting your zero at a specific yardage is so you know how many clicks on your scope you need to make to shoot a target at any range.

All it takes is elevation adjustments on my scope, which are calculated with the BORS, then placing the cross hairs on the target and pressing the trigger. Does not matter if it is 100 or 1000 yards.

I could put you behind my M98 or my M82 .50BMG, give you some instruction and you will be ringing the gong at 500 yards no problem. Depending on how fast you pick things up you could be ringing the gong at 1000 yards after a few hours.

No need for "hold over" shooting when you can use the knobs on your scope that the average deer hunter never uses once they sight in their rifle.

Range the target, consult your ballistics chart, adjust the elevation and put the cross hairs on the target........might be oversimplifying it a bit....but you get the idea.

Go read some of the Extreme Long Range forum at snipers hide. Lots of talk about shooting beyond a mile. Lots of pictures and targets to prove it to.

Everyone forms there attitudes in different ways. The only types of hunting I've ever done is stand hunting and still hunting. My attitude comes from my experiences. Too many times after hearing a bunch of rapid fire I have had to use my tag putting someone elses wounded deer down. I get it that not all people that do drives fail to track wounded deer or make poor shots, but those that do give others a bad attitude when hearing rapid fire. Opening morning two years ago my tag got used on a spike buck that came to my stand with a rear leg about shot off and one in the guts. Two years before that my tag got used when I came across a blood trail and had to finish off a 6pt that had one in the guts. If you can make the shot go ahead and shoot, and feel free to shoot more than once. If you've went through a box of shells and haven't gotten a deer yet, maybe you should try a different method or at least practice up on fox, yotes, and rabbits in the off season.

I bow down to you Oh Holy One.............. Forgive me father, for I have sinned........

Good thing no one has ever taken a poor shot out of a tree stand............ it only happens on deer drives cry LOL!

Gotta go put my boots on, it's gettin deep around here laugh

And I hope you know I'm just having some fun with ya!

Whether you take one shot, or twenty, Encore or AR, I hope you all can get a wall hanger!

And everytime you hear multiple shots you cannot assume the person is driving deer or taking pot shots........

An example:

About 5 years ago I was hunting the late rifle doe season in Wisconsin. My friends and I were still looking to shoot a few more deer for the freezer.

In December, the deer start herding up, and I had a whole herd walk up on me smile I took 6 shots at four deer with a Remington 7600 30/06.

The end result was a 4 dead deer, a happy hunter, and full freezers grin

Good luck to all of you guys this deer season smile

Bman, party hunting is extremely unethical. Anybody that does it is wrong and is demolishing the deer herd. And if you were a good hunter, you woulda got those 4 deer with 2 shots. I mean, who are you, Rambo? You obviously aren't a true hunter. laugh

Believe it or not, there are some people that are a better shot than you. There's even one or two that are a better shot than me... wink I have been noticing a strange phenomenon lately. People that shoot more than me are usually a better shot and know their rifle better than i do. Some of them even know what their bullet's gonna do when elemental changes occur. Weird...

Every year I say, "I din't start this war, but I WILL finish it!". I'm no great shot. Sorry not all of us spend the year at the range, I like to fish too! Guys miss, bullets hit branches, all part of hunting. Any guy with all his shell casings from all his deer aint shot many deer.... I would need a 5 gallon bucket for mine! laugh

Hey don't sell yourself short I'm sure your the best there ever was and 1,000 yds is truly a chip shot and a modest underestimate of your talents, as for me I already bequethed you the better marksman, and aknowledged that I have to be comfortable with my limitations of 400-500yds.

Thank you for the education...

C'mon Jay, just givin ya a hard time. You came off pretty high and mighty on that post. I have no problem admitting when someone is a better shot than me. Shoot, most people are naturally a better shot than I am. You'll never hear me say I'm a better shot than someone. However, I will tell people that I have fired a lot more rounds than most and I know my rifle better than most. Because of that, ive made alot of shots that 99% of people would say my rifle cant do. That's not any special ability I have though. I just like shooting stuff and do it as often as possible!

And I'll say it again. 1000 meters is a chip shot WITH THE RIGHT RIFLE AND OPTICS. I guarantee you just about anyone reading this post could make a 1000 meter shot.

@oldendays That entire post was sarcasm. Just poking a little fun at all the preaching in this forum lately smile

Fishuhalik , relax I'm only giving you a hard time as well. I just happened to disagree in that 1,000 yds is not just a "chip shot" with any gun. I don't argue its possible I just don't think the average or even a good shooter can make that shot so easily. Maybe you can I have no idea people say a lot of things only you know whether you have made that shot, honestly I really don't care the comment just struck me funny when you made it. I have a pretty high end hunting set up I have personally made a 400yd shot, I wouldn't attempt much further too many intangibles get mixed in at those distances and I know my limitations.

I don't have a problem with drives, long range shots, or shooting multiple shots. I just encourage people to take high percentage shots both on drives or in the stand. I also encourage looking into every shot taken and try to not leave a blood trail or wounded animal for the neighbors to take care of. None of us are perfect and we all hunt different with different skill levels, but can't we at least encourage high percentage shots. I have not bagged every deer I've taken a shot at so certainly not holier than thou. Sounds like everyone is starting to play nice, so hope your hunting is fun and safe.

You know what you are... what you're made of. War is in your blood. Don't fight it. You didn't kill for your country. You killed for yourself. God's never gonna make that go away. When you're pushed, killing's as easy as breathing. -Rambo laugh LOL!

I hope you get a chance to get out this fall Fishuhalik! How's work been out there?
