Price County, Wisc. Ruffed Grouse Capital of the World?

My brother and his group from Wi. invited me to go with them this weekend to Price County. Is it really the Grouse capital of the world and is it worth buying an out of state license or is it no better than St Louis County, Mn.?

i grew up off the rush river there..... i'm sure i shot "all of them" in the 70's early 80........hhhuuuummmm...lol

It's no better than St. Louis County, but for $85 I'd pull the trigger on the license and see a new place and hang out with some guys with similar interest. I don't think anything of dropping $85 on a tank of gass to go hunting, and I wouldn't let it hold me back on a license. Grouse season runs through January 31 in Wisconsin so if the weather holds out you can head back over a few times in January when you would normally be done hunting in MN.

I'm in Lincoln county southwest of Price Co. and have been seeing good numbers of birds this year. I go Pheasant hunting in S.D. and talk to other hunters and when we say we're for northern Wi. they say that they were hunting Price county and they were from Georgia! Check out the Outdoor Life Sept. issue and a group from Merrill Wi. has a article on camping and hunting Price Co.

I will say that in NE wisconsin I see numbers of the thunder chicken that have put St. Louis county to shame and for the price of the lodging I will keep going to the cheesehead state

You were invited to go grouse hunting...I'd do it, but then again it doesn't take much arm twisting to get me to chase ruffs

I know Wisc. used to have a 5 day small game license for a decent price. Might want to check and see if that is an option.

I had a good time.

Saw a good number of birds and I actually was able to bring a few home. I can't say it's better than St. Louis County but it was comparable plus i got a dinner and some beers out of it courtesy of my brother

we lease a cabin in NE wisconsin every fall for two months if anyone is interested in going next year send me a pm. A long drive but the birds are there and the cabin is great.
