CONCORD, N.C. – Dale Earnhardt Jr. will not compete in the upcoming NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway after being diagnosed with a concussion following the Oct. 7 race at Talladega, Ala.

Earnhardt, driver of the No. 88 Chevrolets for Hendrick Motorsports, was diagnosed Wednesday afternoon in Charlotte. Regan Smith will be the team’s substitute driver at Charlotte and Kansas.

Yeah, you would hope that he doesn't have the long-term effects like Morneau. I'm sure that Earnhardt, like every other driver, has been in dozens if not hundreds of wrecks throughout his lifetime. All of those things add up. There's only so many times you can shake the old worm farm

With what we are continuing to learn about concussions every year (particularly with the NFL and football, but also in other areas), it is definitely the right move. Too bad though to take a chase driver out of the car...

It really wouldn't be all that surprising if he runs good. Jr has been competitive at Charlotte in the past so they should have a good car set-up for Smith. Smith is a good driver but hasn't been driving the best equipment so his results haven't been there lately. Not to mention, Smith is more or less auditioning for next year since he lost his ride in the Furniture Row car after they brought Kurt Busch over to drive it, so he will be trying pretty hard to do well.
