Snowmobile section eh?? This is great!
I don't mess with the new ones but I can spend days in the garage tinkering with the oldies. I guess old habits die hard. currently I run a 1972 ski doo olympic for ice fishing duty and other work stuff like feeding deer etc. My old ride is a 1967 sears snowcruiser, that one only comes out on special occasions. Right now I'm starting a resto on a 1969 panther for the wife, she has been feeling left out on the old timers classic run in lake park. She loves her cats! When that one is done I'm going to go through a 1975 440 cheetah, maybe make it into new fishing sled only. Time will tell. Does anyone else have a passion for saving the old iron? Paul

Hi Paul...

I can't say I'm as into the oldies as you. But I have been known to dabble in old iron a time or two.

One of my last projects was a 1970 something Rupp. Air cooled twin with a big old single carb pointed right at your.... Well all I can say is a backfire would have been very interesting. Steel cleated track and little to no actual suspension. A real butt buster to say the least. I ask you. What is it about wives and older model cats? Mine wants to find an old Jag(?). The one with the "cat skin" print seat cover. She likes to drive my XLT, but it's just to darn big for her. I'd like to find a Merc Sno Twister. It would be a perfect platform for some fun vintage racing.

Too many projects, so little time. (and money) What's a tinkerer to to do?

Dan

Answer to above question: Start another one!!!

I use to own a Rupp, about a '71 model..American I believe. I have a '70-'72 Polaris in my shed. Inherited from my uncle. The seat isn't even ripped. My plan was to restore it but that was about 4 years ago. It sat in his garage for about 20 years. Anyway, I noticed the inside of the gas tank is pretty rusty. It still has about half tank of gas, well, liquid in it. I know that's the first thing I have to restore. Can I fix the rusty gas tank somehow?

I think the wives and arctic cat thing is along the same line as wives and harley davidsons, something I will never understand or want to for that matter! lolol My first sled was a 1970 292 panther, wish I had it now. As far as that rusty gas tank, do some searching around the snowmobile scrapyards and you should be able to dig up a good one... Paul

Hey Dave...

If your gas tank is not rusted through anywhere, there is a cleaner/coating kit you can buy. The exact name escapes me right now but it's something like cremeacoat. I've used this on quite a few old motorcycle tanks and it works very well. After a good long airing out period, you clean it with the first part of the kit. We dropped a few small marbles in the tanks to knock any loose rust off. Drain that off and dump in the coating substance and "roll" it around to coat all the interior surfaces. Drain off the excess at let'r dry for a long while. This stuff dries hard and smooth.

I'll see if I can dig up and old bottle and get you the exact name of it.

If the tank is beyond hope, there are a bunch of sled salvage yards around. Hi-ten comes to mind. They're out near Anoka someplace.

Hope this helps a little......Dan

Hey about the oldies my dad used to have a 1978 Moto Ski 340 that he just got rid of he could'nt keep it running. Than my dads friend had a 1972 Moto Ski 400 that was set for racing that he has sitting at his place he never rides any more. I just got rid of a 1980 Ski-Doo Citation 277 that I used for I used for Ice Fishing, I was a great sled but the body was just rusting to pieces frown.gif

My first sled was a "71 SkiDoo TNT.The day I brougth it home we started it up in the backyard. All my buddies and my dad were standing around it as the flywheel came off sending "shrapnell" all over the place. Most of my paper route money was spent on the sled to begin with so i replaced the engine with a Hirth 250 single popper.I still loved riding the sled out into the fields just to walk home!
I also had bought a 340 sno jet that once too many times left me walking home so I left it in the field.I don't know what became of that sled,as far as I know its probably still just where I left it!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
