Just a fun little story I wish to share:

Last night I headed out on the lake to do a little muskie fishing. I had one follow and a bite within the first hour.

A little while later I hook into a fish but soon realize its only a little (20-25 inch) pike. I reel him up next to the boat and start looking for my hook-outs when WHAM!!! I thought the little pike got his second wind and dove under the boat...so I put both hands on the rod and try to pull him back up. Well, was I ever surprised when I got him back to the surface...a mid 40s Muskie had him in its mouth and didnt want to let go. I could pull the muskie part way out of the water and he still would not let go.

When he did let go, I moved the pike to the other side of the boat to get the hooks out of its mouth and the muskie came shooting up from under the boat and slammed onto him again. I pulled the pike away, took him out of the water and got my hooks free. I then ran to the other end of the boat and set him free...not sure if the muskie ever found him again or not. I spent some time working the area with a pike shaped/colored lure but never saw him again.

I have had muskies follow my catches before but this one acted like a hungry dog!!!!!

Killer story (no pun intended) just what I needed to get the blood flowing right away.

I seen something similar earlier in the year, 3 of us in the boat one hooks up with a mid 20" northern and as he's bringing it in we notice and "pig" following hot on it's tail. We told him to leave the northern in the water while we did figure 8's for a bit, never saw the fish again, but it sure was cool...

You said you could pull the musky part way out of the water? I would have gotten it close to the boat and grabbed or netted them both. That would have made a pretty cool pic with the northern hanging out of the skies mouth! Sounds like you had fun either way. Awesome story!

Leech:

The thought did go through my mind....it could have easly been netted...it was right next to the boat...one or two feet away. I pulled the muskie's entire head out of the water before he released the pike.

It was just one of those situations that was over before you know it.

Hey Cliffy -
Man what a neat experience. Every once in a while you get to forget about how to catch the things and just enjoy what awesome predators they are. After seeing them hit a few hooked fish of other species (had one grab a smallmouth that I was about to lip once. Scared the bejeebers out of me shocked.gif ) all I can say is if there is reincarnation, I DO NOT want to come back as a cisco... grin.gif

A few years back I was on one of my favorite MN lakes in October. Just having a great day - had the lake to myself, had caught a couple fish already, saw both of them hit... Lake's got a lot of small pike in it so catching them on jerkbaits was pretty common. Had a hit way at the end of a cast on an 8" reef hawg, and knew right away it was a little pike. So I just started cranking it in fast. About half way to the boat, there was all of a sudden all kinds of weight, and I saw a musky roll. So now I'm confused. Figured the fish hit and was headed towards me, and that's why I never felt any weight. So I start fighting the fish, which is decent. But it still feels kinda wierd. Get it to the boat, and when it took a run, I could see the fish, but also something white next to it. Fish comes up to the surface right at my feet, and there's a 40" or so muskie on the front hook, and a pound and a half pike on the back hook... Muskie rolled a few times and the pike tore off - left a pretty good part of his lip on the hook - but man was that a strange sight... Caught 5 fish that day, but couldn't stop shaking my head at the wierdness all day...
