Mid-summer puzzle: "Punchin Through" heavy cover.. Advice needed

Alright guys....going into 4th holiday with time off....want to fish pads and foil...no problem with frogs but

What about "punching through" foil canopy....I've never had much success.

Do you just use heavy jigs and pigs?

Or a heavy texas rig (pegged in front so it does not slide forward) (if so, do you like smooth bait like a worm to slip through weeds or a bulkier bait like a lizard tube or other creature bait.

Finally .... and this couild be my biggest problem ....what about presentation once the bait is through the matting?

Are you aggressive with presentation or do you let it sit with little or no movement (aka, letting a jig and pigs sit still for a 20 couint before bouncing).

I really the appreciate the help.

For milfoil I use two rigs. The heavy rig is a 7'4" with 65-pound power pro. I texas rig a SK Rodent or Beaver on a 5/0 wide gap with a 1/2-ounce SK tugnsten weight (pegged). I use this rig most of the time. I have a medium heavy, 7-foot rod with 30-pound power pro, rigged with a 1/2-ounce Bitsy Flip (SK) and trailer for light milfoil patches or working around the edges of heavy patchs. As a general rule I will not pitch jigs in heavy milfoil, as they hang up on milfoil more frequently than a texas rig does. I also make short fast pitches, it hits, sinks, I lift it two or three times and then make a new pitch just a few feet from the last one... on and on and on.

Sounds like a job for the "punch rig." Check out this link to see a good step by step on how to set it up: Advanced Angler This rig has been used down south for quite a while but is gaining popularity up here in the north as well. I started fishing it a couple of years ago and man what a difference it can make. I always use the sliding skirt. You can find them online but I had a buddy of mine make some at his tackle business which was great because I got to customize my colors cool Obviously you can use what ever hook you want as long as it's the right size and type for the plastic bait you are using.

I'll use anywhere from 1/2oz. to 1 1/2oz Tungsten weights but again use whatever you are comfortable with. This a great rig for "punching" through weed mats and awesome in lilies because it won't get hung up in the crotches wink Give it a shot, I think you'll really have fun with it.

Depends on were the fish are positioning. On high sunny days the fish with "usually" position right underneath the mat were there is the most shade. So if they don't hit it right when it breaks through lift your bait up and pound the underside of the mat.

Is punch fishing fun or is it just a means of putting fish in the boat for a tourney or during the middle of the day? Seems like fishing with that heavy gear and just dropping it into holes and pulling fish out would almost be like cane pole fishing.

Don't get me wrong, catching fish is always the goal, but this seems like one of the least fun ways to do it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Let's face it! The MOST fun way to catch bass is with a top water lure, BUT! grin There are many ways to catch fish, and busting thru matts is just one. Some like to fish this way, others don't. Try and see if you enjoy it. Otherwise fish the way you prefer.

For me anytime I can pitch a jig it's fun. Punch rigs let me fish with the same technique in heavy cover but it' more fun because there's no cleaning your lure after every pitch. If you've ever wrestled a 5 pounder through a thick mat then u know how fun it is. And since when is putting fish in the boat for a tournament or catching fish during the day not fun? grin

IMO, it's extremely boring and tedious until you get that first bite of the day. Then it starts being fun.

Still not my favorite technique though. I have a really hard time putting down my frog rod to start flippin.

Sorry guys, I wasn't trying to declare war or anything on flipping milfoil mats. I guess I shouldn't knock it until I try it.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to flipping or jig fishing in general. I need to learn to put the senko down.

I'll be on Centerville in a couple weeks and that lake's milfoil is so thick you need a downrigger weight to punch through it. I tried fishing the edge last year and didn't have much luck, so maybe I'll give punching a try this time.

I cant think of a better day on the lake then pitching shallow cover. I have been using the punch skirt set up the last few years in place of a jig, and it works sooo much better. Setting the hook on a giant fish in heavy cover is just pure awesomeness.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
