Mahkwa Resort on the Lac Seul

Recommended Posts

For the past few years we have been catering to the Lac Seul Resort on Lost Lake near Hudson, Ontario annually. Some of the guys in our group would like to consider staying somewhere else that can put us closer to the big water on the Lac Seul. One resort I'm looking at is Mahkwa Lodge.

Anyone have any information about this lodge they'd like to share?

Can you drive to the resort?

What is your opinion of the staff and cabins?

Any other resorts in the area we might find interesting? We prefer to drive directly to the resort rather than having to transport our gear by boat.

Any information will be appreciated. Thanks,

You can drive to the resort now...the facilities are nice as I have stayed on the American plan and have also done the other plan (cook your own food) and both have been good....not a 5 star hotel but comfortable settings to hang out and sleep in...the staff is very friendly!! Highly recommend them

Have done the american plan and the one where you bring your own food. The American plan is well worth it. Top notch fishing and great place. Used to go there when you had to boat it and the drive up makes it even better.

I love Mahkwa Lodge, and I agree that the staff is very friendly.

The road in was better this year than ever before. Usually I feel guilty about punishing my vehicle, trailer, and boat on that road. But this year it was graded, smoothed, and the rocks were either gone or covered over.

Also, the docks were in MUCH better shape this year. So they've made a couple infrastructure improvements that made a big difference.

But I have to say the quality of service and competency has taken a slight dip the past couple years. They've screwed up our reservations the last 3 years in a row, and in talking to other people, they've experienced the same thing.

Just DO NOT make the trip without some kind of confirmation of your reservation.

Also, the food quality on the American Plan has suffered the last couple years. It used to be that the food was excellent. Now it just fills your belly is about the best that you can say.

But hey, it's fish camp, not the Ritz Carlton, so it is what it is, and I take it for that. I'm just mentioning something I've noticed. All in all, I love Lac Seul and I love Mahkwa Lodge. I do wish they'd get it together just a bit better.

Roger Bull the manager of Mahkwa health has been on the decline the past couple years. I actually stay in some of Roger's wifes cabin just east of Mahkwa. They call it Makoons you do your own cooking here but they are very nice clean cabins. I well be up in a couple weeks myself. The bigger water is good but do not over look Vaughn lake that is where we probably spend 80% of our time. Bray lake has in the past been very good to us for larger fish.

Water temps were way warmer this year than normal. Probably not a huge suprise. We had no problems catching fish in Vaughn but they were the smaller fish that we found. Good fishing for a meal though good fishing right on the west shoreline at the narrows after the bridge going into Vaughn. We spent most of our 5 days fishing up at Wolf Narrows. We had a good tip from a friend that was coming back the day we left he said they had caught nice fish around this area. We found fish from 10-30 fow. That was the goofy thing to they moved around everyday. First day we found them in 21 fow then the next it was 15-17. In talking with other guys up there they were fishing different areas but finding the same thing. The fish also seemed pretty spread out not as schooled up as we normally have found at the same time of year. The Fri before we left it rained all day and then the Sun night-Mon morning while we were there it rain hard. So I don't know if with those two weather systems it scatter the fish or what. But we didn't fish a single spot and not catch fish just some were better than others. We caught several slot fish and fish upto the biggest of the trip 25 3/4" . Probably 4 around 24". Good trip as far as bait nothing seemed to stand out as the best. Leechs were a steady producer. Our salted Minnows did well most mornings but then died off and night crawlers seemed to take over. Gulp worked very well as too.
