Honda cb900

Reef Runner

Recommended Posts

I am looking to get a bike to just to cruse around town on. Nothing to special but I dont want it to run like dump. I have foud a 1982 Honda cb900 that is in my price range. He said it is a cold started and on cylinder burns a little oil. Does anyone out there have an opinion on this model?

Is it the C (Custom) model? Good solid engine, but the burning oil on one cylinder is concerning. If the choke is functioning and the carbs are in sync, being cold blooded is no big deal.

If it the F model, I'd be all over that - That was a great bike. Better handling than the C and lighter too. F models are far less common.

I buy and sell parts for the CB900. I have bought over 20 in the last 3 years. The majority of these bikes have a burned cylinder because they don't keep up on the valve adjustment. The other issue is the cam chain tensioners are around 30 years old and are at the end of their life cycle. They are great bikes and will last a long time if you keep up on the valve adjustments. Just keep in mind if the cam tensioner goes the motor will need to be pulled and rebuilt. I hope I am not stearing you away from them but I do like them. If you ever need anything I will probably have it for you or will be able to find it.

How many miles are on it? There are a bizzion older bikes out there on the sale sites. Try to find one that some old guy had in storage that he has ment to get back on but never did. Their out there but you may have to clean out the carbs and adj valves on all of the older ones. wink

Leech is right. My first 900 was only $200. Owner died 14 years prior and they didn't have keys or title. It only had 2625 miles on it. I bought another bike because tank was shot. Swapped out tank and carbs and battery and started right up.

Great bikes.

I had one for about 8 years 10 years ago....mine also had a little smaoke when I got on it. I had 3800 miles when I sold it.

Miss it every summer....Marrage/kids and you start to lose the toys.

Some day maybe another 900 will come my way.....
