ac777
How big would an average 8 point 120" deers antlers be in velvet this time of year. Outside of ears yet? Putting on several extra points? What percentage of antler growth is usually done by now? Just wondering because Ive been doing more scouting this year and seen some nice bucks just trying to gauge what their size will be this fall? Bear55
It's pretty hard to say, each buck kind of grows at his own pace. Some start early and don't pack on much antler later in the summer. Others catch up fast later on, all depends on genetics. The best indicator I see with good bucks in velvet is mass, if their main means look heavy they will likely have a nice rack later this year. slimngrizzly
The "BIG" deer ive got on camera in the last week are well outside the ears now. But these are wider bucks too... Mine are just a couple inches on their G2's and G'3s and I haven't seen any with a defined G4 yet... it changes FAST by the day now. The big ones pack it on! But like Bear says, some grow big early and stall late. Some grow slow to start then pack it on at the end..... and some just grow like weeds as soon as they drop their sheds. If theres gong to be 170"+ up there, then theres really no time to waste.
sticknstring
Most all the mature deer I've watched grow have all been early starters. You should have a pretty good idea if a buck is going to be 120"+ by now. At or outside the ears with defined 2s & starting 3's & 4's. By the beginning of July, the bucks in my area are 75% grown. We're almost there!
