Lead Core ????

I don't know why (I have 18 as well). I went to the big C store in Rogers last fall and they set me up with a combo. They put on a 30' mono leader as well for me. Worked REALLY well last fall trolling.

I use 18 lb as well with a 12-15 foot leader. I like the shorter lead as it makes it easier for me to gauge the depth of the lure and I can get the line out that much quicker. I have the big C brand on my rods currently. I did have suffix before but found the lead was breaking and poking through. This could have also been from my learning curve as I had lots of snags as I figured out what to do. I also purchased a nail knot tool for less than 10 bucks - well worth the money to swap out a new leader at any time! I also like to use swivel crosslock snaps - quick and easy to change out lures.

I'm also new to Lead Core fishing. Getting really excited. Picked up a rig and line yesterday, been reading a ton.

One question I haven't found an answer to yet is what type of connection do you use between the leader (mono for me) and leadcore?

Tie direct or a small swivel?

If you tie direct is there any preferred knot?

Thanks all, and may the fish be with you!

I prefer a small swivel but many people tie direct. You can use a uni or blood knot, and there are a few other ways to connect the two as well. Do a youtube search on the subject and there are plenty of videos out there to help you get the job done.

I use a uni to uniknot, but a blood knot, or a nail knot would all work. I have also seen a method where the line is threaded through the dacron sleeve of the leadcore with a needle and then you tie once around the dacron and add a simple overhand knot and trim off the tag of mono. This works well with heavier mono, say in the 17-25# class but I'm not sure it would work as well with lighter mono. The dacron acts as a sleeve and as pressure is applied the dacron squeezes down on the mono to prevent it from pulling out. Kind of like the Chinese finger trap concept.
