LwnmwnMan2
My Quickbooks is freezing up on me lately. There is an instance that stays in the process tab of task manager even though the application doesn't show that it is running.I cannot restart Quickbooks as it acts as though it's already running, when it isn't.If I go into Task Manager, I can see the process, but I cannot kill it.Even if I try to restart the computer, it'll hang until I just hold down the power button. Is there a "stronger" way to kill the process if task manager won't kill it?I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, Quickbooks Pro 2011 and I'm working long hours right now, so my responses will be lax. upnorth
OK you can try this, not sure if it will be more effective. Start a command window as administrator. Then run tasklist - this will list your running apps along with the PID. Will look like below:Image Name PID Session Name Session# Mem Usage========================= ======== ================ =========== ============System Idle Process 0 Services 0 24 KSystem 4 Services 0 18,312 Ksmss.exe 344 Services 0 604 Kcsrss.exe 484 Services 0 4,424 Kwininit.exe 536 Services 0 2,384 Kcsrss.exe 552 Console 1 40,316 Kservices.exe 596 Services 0 8,444 Kwinlogon.exe 628 Console 1 4,080 KThen run taskkill /PID <PID number> /FThe /F is a force close. upnorth
Another thought, is quickbooks by chance starting as a service? If so there are a few options.
LwnmwnMan2
Okay, I have a rain day finally.Yes, Quickbooks runs both as a service, as well as it was in the startup under msconfig.I deleted the service the other day before I posted the first time and everything worked fine for 1.5 days, even my problem of the USB going to sleep permanently and having to do a hard restart went away. Then yesterday I was doing paperwork and the USB froze, so I shut the computer down, restarted. Then, I tried to start Quickbooks, but it said it was already running. I did a hard restart again, went into msconfig, cleared out all of the Quickbooks options on restart, and now am running it again.I'm heading out the door to do some baseball bat to the knee type situations for people that still owe me money for snowplowing, so I'll see what the computer is doing when I get back. upnorth
There is more than likely some spot in quickbooks options that tell it to start at boot up. So everytime you fire it up it could be putting itself into the start up again.I don't use the app, but some of things are similar between apps and a few do that. I had already disabled the startup feature a while ago.
upnorth
OK try this. Make your changes in msconfig then restart the PC. I know this sounds lame, but I have seen many times where you make changes like you are doing, then you need to do some sort of a hard shutdown the changes have been lost. Jim43
Its really amazing how many apps will attach themselves to windows startup. msconfig is a very useful tool for disabling many unwanted programs that open on startup. I clean out my startup at least once a month since many of the programs I use will automatically place them back in start when used.
masoct3
Backup. Uninstall. Install. Updates. Try that.
