MN speed Limit?

The only boat that has ever cut me off while trolling a weedline was a pontoon full kids piloted by a young mom who cut between me and the shore. They zipped by me waving, smiling and laughing less than 15 feet away. I was absolutely speechless as I reeled in as fast as I could.

I know they meant well and they were just out enjoying the lake but.. Just when you think you have seen it all.

Be safe out there. Don't be afraid to give the other guy a bit more safe distance than you know you need. You'll appreciate it when someone does the same for you.

I do not have a statute to back up the validity of this, but I was once informed by the Ramsey County Sherrif's water patrol that there is a 50 MPH speed limit statewide. Maybe it is in the lawbooks somewhere?

I was just at a volunteer water patrol meeting last night with the Wright Cty Sheriff's Dept. As magnum indicated, there is a 50 mph speed limit on lakes when frozen, but no speed limit on open water.

This opener me and my nephew were anchored on a tip of a point along with about 20 other boats, some yaahoo was coming across the lake wide open getting closer and closer. We started yelling and he didnt see us untill he was within 20-30 yards and had to make a sharp turn barely missing us , that was the scaredest ive been in a long time, what an silly-me. And throughout the day i saw many boaters just going as fast as they could right past everyone anchored up, why do they have to come so close or why cant they slow down out of respect. Another guy almost ran into another boater right in front of us, he was going at a good clip not even looking, looked like he was trying to tie his shoe or something, he didnt look up either untill many people started yelling at the guy. What the heck people slow down, especially when you are within close quarters of others.

There's a real good chance that the correct answer has not yet been posted concerning speed limits for boats. If you look at the post that Grum made it indicates that the Commissioner (of Natural Resources) can assist County Boards in establishing speed limits on bodies of water. I just checked and the Ramsey County Board has established a 40 mph speed limit on Lake Owasso. So in order to provide a definitive answer you would have to check the code of ordinances for each county to see if one was set for a particular lake.

So those who say there is no speed limit, and those that say it is X miles per hour - you could be wrong.
