NE Scouting trip

We just got back last night. Everything is ahead just like we all know. The birds down there already broke up and breeding. The local sheriff we hunt with has one hen in the yard nesting already. Ticks out in full force. Going to be tough but will be a good time. Found a few sheds and one dead head.

Going back April 7th hope we can at least put a few birds in the freezer.

Saturday was 81 and Sunday was 60. They have had great weather also. Our land owner already had one Alpha field planted and had about 4 inches of growth already. Most the farmers were turning and liming the fields right now.

Thanks for the update Hoyt - nice looking sheds! I knew the ticks would be bad - good reminder to pick up some repellent. Last year snow and this year 80 degrees. Unreal. It's tough to hit the timing just right unless you got a flex schedule.

I take it you didn't do any hunting then? Going to be a long 2 weeks for you I bet. I'll be heading down on the 4th. Hoping for calm days with temps in the 60's. Probably too much to ask for.

My cousin/neighbor was down in the Niobrara area someplace yesterday morning and shot a jake and missed a tom with his crossbow. He said the birds were going crazy on the roost before fly down. Had two different groups come from different directions at the same time when he got his bird and missed the other one. Said there was a fair amount of hunters in the area.

Sunday was opener and we did not hunt. We wanted to make sure that we kept scouting not only for birds but deer. I did call in 3 Jakes to 5 yards with just my mouth and scratching. So I know were a couple loud mouth Jakes can be taken and keep that one in the back pocket if things are not working out.

Saw a few people out hunting no one on any of the public areas. Good luck SNS.

The Niobrara area gets hit hard with hunters.
