Curling Shingles

replace them. No way around it... You most likely have a bad run of certainteed shingles. Best case scenario, go talk to your local lumber yard, get the paperwork and the name of a contractor to come out take the samples off and take photos etc... and send in for the warranty claim... you may at least get a few bucks back.

Otherwise its possible you have a very inexpensive shingle such as Nards or places like that tend to sell, and they are shot.

Needless to say, Once they start curling, they are shot... no way around it... they will only continue to get worse, and will be extremely brittle... and once they start doing that, you are really depending on your underlayment as your barrier... a driving rain, or wind driven snow will find its way underneath those shingles and the problem only gets worse...

also make sure your roof in ventilated properly, a "hot" roof will cause premature failure as well...

Not trying to sell you a new roof, just letting you know, once they get to that point its tough to save them... I have done a lot of roofing, and have seen a lot of bad things from waiting to long....

Check out the Owens Corning Duration Shingles for your replacements, I have had VERY good luck with these, and are a very good shingle...

Good luck.

Good information in the previous post!

8 years old is getting you back to the period where Certainteeds were an issue. Something to look into.

"Hot" roof as previously mentioned will can premature shingle failure as well.

Once they are curling you're done for. Like said above poor ventilation can wreck ANY brand of shingle in short order. 8 years is the very tail end of the problem certainteed shingles. If thats even the brand. If it is, more than likely its the New Horizon line. Malarkey is one of the better brands out there today for both quality and warranty coverage.

Not to contradict Josh's excellent answer. If the curling is on only one side (especially if it's the sunny side) you might want to consider a ventilation problem. Improper soffit to peak ventilation causes such temp extremes that shingles will curl due to the extremes in temperature and the inability of the shingle to expand/contract without distorting the shape. If you replace, make sure to have the contractor address this potential problem.

Also have them check the chutes in the attic to make sure that you in fact have them in place and that they are not plugged with insulation. I have also seen aluminum soffit installed over plywood soffit without cutting it out to ensure proper venting.

yes, this is a very common thing to find, another thing to keep in mind is that air will follow the easiest route, much like water flows, SO, sometimes there are other things to look for, we did a roof a couple years back we pulled the sheathing, re framed the roof, new chutes, and cut holes in the wood soffits to allow air to come up from the soffits, we also corrected the bath fan vents, which had originally just be dead ended into the attic, so everything was done correctly in the situation... so we thought... Still had a frost issue this past winter, not a big one, nothing that caused any damage, but still not good. What had we missed??? There where gabel vents in the side walls, which, the air takes the easiest route... through the sidewall gabel vent, and out the ridge vent, which only kept the top 2-3 foot vented properly, instead of creating the flow from the bottom to the top as needed...

So, yes, correcting issues, identifying the short cuts others may have taken, and knowing past building practices and which ones worked, and which ones didn't is a key factor in about everything that has to do with remodeling.

This case was an easy remedy, but proves how tricky it can be at times to correct an issue...

Like others have said more than likely organic CT shingles, could also be organic IKO shingles. Both will curl CT will pay money IKO won't.

You can go online and print out a claim form.

If it's isolated to only a few random tabs and I've seen this occure you could do a repair.

The ticket for the CT warranty claim is it's now limited only to original homeowners or building owners and it pays the most if filed in 10 years or less after install if defects are present.
