Love Push Button Handle on Ice Reels!!

Why don't more manufactures have "Push Botton" handles options on spinning reels. Love them because on my traditional reels, I have to unscrew the handles so that the fit properly in my rod cases - it is a pain when you use a lot of rods. With the push botton handles, push botton at the base and it folds down (no unscrewing) - Added bonus is that it folds down a lot more compact than the ones I unscrew. If you use a "Stone Legacy" rod case you will REALLY appreciate this compactness - allows me to fit 8 rods instead of 4 in that case grin

I traditially buy higher end stuff (shimano, pflueger, tica) but none of tham have it. I picked up a cheap Frabill and Jason Mitchell reels - they both have them. They also put a larger diameter spool which I also like.

I don’t like that the screw in knob on the opposite side of the reel (holds the handle in place) spins when turning the reel handle. I pistol grip when holding my ice combo – so when the retaining knob spins when reeling up it rubs on the palm of my hand … very annoying. This is not a problem with the Pfluegers or Shimanos.

Anyone know if there is a third party that makes reel handles with this push button feature that would fit on Shimanos/Pfluegers/Tica’s?

umm? I have no idea what you are talking about with the push button business? I don't think I've ever seen a reel that does what you describe? Cool feature though. I've got an older JM reel and I'm certain it doesn't do that.

the only push button i'm familiar with is something like a zebco 404...

Hmmmmm....

At first I thought our own Pushbutton had designed something new grin. Then I figured it out. I own a Tica that has the folding push button style handle. I think it's because they aren't as durable as the one piece forged hanlde's are. Too much play/slop develops after prolonged usage.

Yah ... it is painful and confusing to describe. I'll try to post pictures later to show what I am talking about.

Riverfishingmiss,

Didn't know Tica's had these before ... I would think they could engineer the handles so the pushbutton style would last without developing sloppy play. My current Tica's you have to loosen the retaining knob, I've had a couple incidents where they came completely off while in the case - One of these days I wouldn't be suprised if I ended up losing that knob ... hopefully after and not before I am done fishing.

I'm hoping to make it to the Sportsman Show at the end of the month. If any of the manufacturing reps are there, I'll try to remember to ask them about it.

Fleet Farm Lakes and Rivers is one that I'm familiar with that has the push button. I bought one because I liked the feature so much. It went back after one trip out. The reel is junk.

But yes, I agree, the simple handle fold would be an appreciated feature on any future reel I buy.

The Frabill Bro Series reeel with the bush botton handle has been a decent pan fishing reel. Haven't put it to a hard test on bigger fish yet, and had limited use on it so far.

They were selling them for $20 (normally $30) at the St Paul Ice Show. Pretty good value for a basic panfish reel.

Although they aren't made any more, if you can find any Abu Garcia Cardinal 700U's, snap them up. ;-)

Those little buttons are spring loaded and they do pop out once in awhile, then the handle is shot. Had this happen to one of mine this week, probably could have gotten another one somewhere, but wound up lining up the handle and super gluing everything in place.

Still, pressing that button and folding that handle down sure is a space saver. I have a number of them.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
