What to do?

Recommended Posts

I have about 5,000 acres of land to hunt for waterfowl in ND. The land owner has a serious Coyote problem and they are chasing his calves around. He has asked us to take them off his property, but other than shooting straight, I have no idea what to do. Driving out to a slew in the morning we can see 3 or more just standing in an open and picked field. I have no idea what to do even if I shot some and I don't want to just waste them. Do I have to skin them? Is it even worth it to try to sell them? How much can you get for a fur? What do you do with the rest?

pelts are worth money, on the round, or skinned. But, may be getting past prime now... I would start by zeroing the rifle, getting accustomed to shooting out of good positions, that easily conceal you, and get yourself a mouth call to start with, about anything that sounds like something dying usually works... i have found these calf crazed yotes to be pretty bold, and if they haven't been hunted they'll most likely be about the easiest hunt you can have for yotes... Stay close to the cow/calf area... for two reasons, I personally believe thats where the yotes will be near by ( they tend to stick close to food sources) and if you want to help him out, first of all kill them, second, whatever you don't kill get them educated that the cow/calf herd is not a safe place to find food. These animals are a lot smarter than you or I, they will learn fast what you are up too... best plan, don't miss... chances of calling the same yote twice are slim...

others in here have much more experience than I, but this is what I have found when hunting yotes around cattle here and down in IA at my brother in laws farms...

Good luck! If ya need a second shooter... ;-)

I shoot Winchester 150 Ballistic silver tip. I have been looking into a more economical shooting/plinking gun. What round is suggested or ideal? .223? Does a .17HMR have enough kick to work on Coyotes? I also have my two sons coming up, but are a few years out. I was thinking maybe a .243 was a long term option, so they could start deer hunting with that when they are old enough.

.223 is cheap with a lot of options... I shoot a .243 with 58 gr v maxs, works well... and could be a deer gun if i wanted... 22-250 is an excellent yote gun, and pretty flat out to 300 i believe... I wouldn't do a .17hmr on yotes... you would be better off with the scatter gun at effective range with them, and shot placement is key... (yes, I have shot a couple yotes with my .17HMR, but only because it was the gun I had with when the opportunity arose... I do not know much about the 7mm... I am sure others on here will all have a favorite caliber for this task... but, a .223 is plenty effective, little less flat, and a little less uuummmmffff then other calibers long rang.... but my hunting partner and I can sit down and both kill soup cans at 300yds... he has a .223 and I shoot my .243... so, needless to say, they both can do the job...

How often do you plan to hunt yotes? If its just an occasional thing then I probably would look for a gun that can also be utilized in other ways so you aren't shelling out for a gun you'll only rarely use. My suggestion would be the .243. Since you said your boys are coming up in age that would be a good starter deer rifle for them with the larger grain bullets and with the smaller grain bullets it should make a great yote gun.
