Okuma Reels

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if anyone has put much time into the Okuma line of baitcasters, either the Cedros or Isis. If so how do they handle throwing blades? Are they comparable to the Calcuta 400b? I have not used either but have heard good things about the 400b. Thanks.

I'd say that's a good comparison. Last season I used a Red Isis for blades and big baits. This is basically the older version of the new Cedros. It worked well and had no problems all summer. I liked it enough that I picked up a Cedros to use on a different rod this season.

I can't speak on durability yet, but as far as everyday use goes I really enjoyed it.

Have not owned or used a 400B but I own both Isis and Cedros... I love both reels... Went searching and bought them off online auction site... I use the Cedros for Big Rubber and Big blades while I use Isis for Gliders/Topwaters/Jerkbaits... works perfectly!!!

That reminds me... time for me to take them both apart to clean and put in new oil/grease... Looking forward to 2nd season with both reels...

Both definitely are a big UPGRADE from Abu Garcia reels... and worth every cent IMO

Haven't had much experience with the okuma line, however I have owned one red isis. After the first summer of using it (20-25 days on the water) it was making a weird noise when casting along with a decrease in casting range. Sent it in three times to the manufacturer with the same problem before they finally replaced it. Customer service was sketchy at best. Sold the new one before using it. Haven't had any problems with my Calcutta 400B's. Absolutely will be buying a shimano for my next reel. Just my opinion.

Have never used any Okuma baitcasters.. but I can guarantee you they make a very good and dependable fly reel at reasonable price(picked up a new one on the bay for $45. already own 1).. I'd be willing to drop cash on their other styles of reels knowing and seeing the performance of their fly reels.. I'd imagine quality across the board..

400b is superior. It just is. but the Isis is a decent reel for the price. i don't believe they are being made anymore however. The 400b is a staple in the muskie fishing arena and will be for a long time. i have 4 of them and they all hold up well if you take care of them.

I like the Okumma rods but I would just invest in a Saltist for a reel.

+1

I have one from Okuma (I don't recall the model) I really really like. It just isn't a big bait reel. I throw bucktails, topwater, anything that is light and goes a good distance.

It casts much better than my saltist, but my bet is there is too much plastic inside for dawgs and blades.
