Hunting and fishing licenses and fee increases

does it have to do with bring in more out of staters? While i think everyone should spend their fair share, i can imagine in these tight days, they are looking how to increase opportunity to everyone. I guess the same could be said about the folks that don't hunt or fish but still have to pay some revenue to enjoy the things the state has to offer.

I am sure the State does not want to lose outstate traffic and the resorts put some pressure on the Legislatures to not increase the NR license to much.

For as much as I fish, it would not bother me to see a reasonable increase in the fee structure.

We can blame this on the DNR but it may be more accurate to point the finger at the state reps as they really run the DNR or at least decide what will be done.

I myself am not a fan of rising the price on license. We have more people buying license than ever before. I would love to see where this money would go if there is a hike increase. I believe alot of money could be saved in other places. For one is it necissary for every CO officer to have New truck,Snowmobile, atv and boat. The average persons vehicle is 8 years old why not theres. Just my opinion.

I am not saying just hand over more money, but licenses are one of the cheapest part of hunting and fishing trips. When you see boats of $20,000 and guns of $2,000+ a license is really a small part of the over all cost of the outdoors.

600,000+ resident license sold compared to less then 100,000 non resident license sold where are they gonna make the money? Raise the resident $4 95% of that 600,000 are still gonna buy, there gonna complain but still buy. Raise the non resident license $10+ that less then 100,000 can tell the state of MN to bump off they will stay in there own state to fish. Weather we like it or not we are at the mercy of DNR, they need to make money and who do you think is gonna pay? The DNR isnt dumb they know we will pay to stay here and fish they know they number of people who dont like the increase and dont buy a license will be overcame by the increase in license cost.

Harvey you maybe right on the fact they don't want to lose the tourists. Tourists bring in a lot of money.......gas, food, lodging, etc etc. Mr. Klean you make some good points as well with the numbers of licenses sold.

The two biggest reasons I don't leave Minnesota is cost of out of state licenses and the fact that I feel the fishing here is Fantastic and the hunting is pretty good.

I support the increases and I always buy the walleye stamp as well for stocking. As someone else said, the license fee's are minimal compared to all the other aspects of fishing and hunting.

I'm not sure the exact reason for the smaller increase for out of staters, but I'm not overly bothered by it.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
