Favorite Mono / Flouro

What's everybody's favorite mono and flouro these days? I use braid so much that my stock is getting pretty old and would like to get opinions before restocking. If you have specialties instead of just one goto would like to hear that too.

Also, has anybody noticed a if there's a better mono/flouro for cold weather open water? I could swear my mono may break easier when it's cold but don't have enough evidence to make a good judgement...

I also use braid a lot, probably to much. For cranks i've always had good luck with 12lb trilene xl. I used Izorline Platinum this year in 15lb for pitching 1/4-1/2 oz jigs and t-rigs and really liked how it performed. I have limited use with flouro so i'll let someone else chime in on suggestions for that.

Hiya -

I only use mono for a couple things anymore. Spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and topwaters I use 17# Trilene XT. Same as it always was - durable, tough an inexpensive. Never found a compelling reason to switch to something else. For casting grubs for smallies, I use Cortland Endurance, which is a great line almost nobody knows about. Really easy to handle, small diameter, but very abrasion resistant. If I were still using mono a lot, this is what I'd use for stuff like jigworms, etc.

Fluoro on casting gear, I use Bass Pro XPS. Handles fine on casting gear, tough, low stretch... I've been perfectly happy with it, and it's relatively inexpensive. I'm sure there's "better" out there, but I don't have any complaints about XPS at all. On spinning gear, I use Seaguar Invisx, because it does handle a little better than XPS on a spinning reel. I have just about talked myself into trying Sunline on my spinning gear this year though. On both casting and spinning, I do use KVD line conditioner, which does seem to make a difference.

As far as cold weather line, frankly about the best is Trilene XL in real cold weather, and XT isn't bad. Part of why I've stuck with XT is it doesn't get too stiff in cold conditions. I tried a couple different copolymers over the years, and they turned to wire when it got cold. One was almost unfishable... Line conditioner does seem to help here too.

Cheers,

RK

I like good ol' trilene xt. always been good to me.

I am one of the very few that isn't a big fan of flourocarbon lines for most applications. I tried it a fair amount about four or five years back for bass fishing but it didn't seem to take shock very well and I occasionally broke off, doesn't handle as well, and costs much more than typical mono. It gets lots of hype and lots of people probabaly don't even know why they are using it, they just do cause it gets lots of press. That being said I am sure it is great in certain applications and I should maybe try some new flouro products again.

Fishcast -

If you haven't tried it in the last few years, you should try ti again - especially if you tried something like Berkley Vanish. The lack of shock resistance makes me suspect that's what it was, because that's Vanish to a T. The joke was they called it Vanish because it made lures and hooked fish disappear...

Newer generation FC is a totally different animal. It handles better, handles shock better... I use it a lot, for lots of applications, but there are some things - topwaters, spinnerbaits, some crankbaits - where I don't like it at all. It's not magic. Just another tool in the toolbox. But...there are situations where I'm convinced I get more bites because of it.

Seagaur Invisx 15# FOR most applications.

# 12 for cranks deeper than 10 feet otherwise 10# . It has been the best I have tried .

I tried seagaur red label and felt it was better than 100% trilene fouro yet not as good as Invisx.

I run one braid rod (personally dont care much for it) and times are tough if its out of the rod locker.

P-line 8/10# cxxl green for spinning applications like 1/8 oz texas rigs in open water or lite jig worms. drop shot.

It all has some memory of course but feel sinking qaulities , abrasion qaulities and sensitivity are a bonus resulting in more bites . so trade off is worth it in my opinion .

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
