Mixing green and orange coolant?

Recommended Posts

For topping off it should be fine, but if the coolant in the vehicle is still fairly new, it might be better to use the proper kind. Without going into a long explanation of the makeup of coolant, universal coolants, while still properly providing freeze point protection, it may fall slightly short or possibly dilute the proper coolant of its original anti corrosion and lubricating qualities.

The main thing you dont want to do is mix the old style green with the orange extended life as it can cause a type of "coagulation" and form a substance that can really cause problems.

I don't remember the brand but I bought some coolant a while back that was green and was clearly marked that it could be used with any color coolant.

Thought I'd also that was about 2-3 months ago and I added it to my daughters car with orange coolant and there has been no issues.

I think the Oreilly house brand universal is a light green color. In most cases universal coolant will be just fine. The main thing to watch out for is, while some universal coolants claim to be "compatible" with all types, does not mean they are "recommended" by the automaker or that it meets their individual specifications.
