Hearing Protection Help?

Recommended Posts

Kind of a long story but I need some help. My son (12) had been diagnosed with a hearing impairment. After 2 test with an audiologist and an MRI we were ready to have him fitted with hearing aids. On the final test for fitting… he passed his test??? Further test showed that he had normal hearing at that time. During all of this the Audiologist asked about him being exposed to gun shots. At the time he had been exposed to two (2) shots out of his 7mm08, he shot 2 deer. The audiologist told us that being exposed 1 or 2 times can affect hearing. I’m thinking… gee I’m 50 why can I hear???

Anyway my wife and I wanted to protect him while hunting. This is where I need help.

I went to G Mountain and purchased the $199.00 set by Walker, they had a lot of background noise. You can guess that he would not wear them. Any ideas of what’s the best route for a 12 year old, I’m afraid of the sport ears not fitting properly and a big price tag?

Thanks

the hearing problem your son experienced was temporary as is most acute exposure to gunfire.

You can get quality ear plugs that will not completely block his hearing but will block some of the harmful sounds. I really don't advise any kind of muff for hunting since it will affect how he places his head on the stock of the rifle.

wensel,

i hear for sure. i'm 33 years old and shot an unbeleivable amount of rounds through rifles and shotguns with no ear protection. i also work as a phy ed teacher so i have had lots of exposure to load noises. my ears ring a lot and if i ever don't wear my walker game ears or another form of ear protection my ears hurt and ring badly when shooting firearms.

my dad and i both wear the walker game ears now when shooting, not sure if they are the best thing out there. but none the less, i recommend having ear protection of some sort for your son when shooting.

i also recommend it to anyone else who doesn't wear ear protection when shooting, it will eventually catch up to you if you don't.

Thx guys, He and I always wear the protection during practice. He always did.

The problem occured.. I guess in the field, with his 2 shots in 2 years.

So generally what Im looking for is a product to use during hunting not practice,

thanks again!

I have two sets made by an audiologist in Anoka. One set for practice the other has baffles in them for hunting. Any hearing related business should be able to make the molds and order them. Mine were about 100 a pair and are not electronic. I think the company name is similar to Deltone.
