Wheel house sheeting

What do you all have for exterior sheeting on your wheel house? Do you use a plywood sheeting on the stud walls before the exterior sheeting or just fasten the exterior sheeting to the studs? Has anyone ever tried non-vented aluminum soffit panels for exterior sheeting? It would be less expensive than the flat aluminum 4 x 8 panels and I would think stronger with the ribs.

I bet that the aluminum would be stronger than the vinyl siding that guys used and that stuff tears off also.

Pole barn steel would work good also

The Aluminum coil that we used for trimming out sofit boxes works great I have built to spear shacks with them and one with pole barn steel.

Plywood is ok but its alot of maintance also

It could work I guess but you'd more than likey have to sheath the fish house first.

Quite a few of the 50's houses in Minneapolis and St. Paul have vertical solid souffit on the gables. We've torn some off that are very very thick, almost like steel. Most often though they are very thin and would damage very easily if installed on the fish house.

Not 100% sure but I think the vertical souffit most commonly installed on siding is double five inch. If you put it on the fish house you'd have to run your studs 10 inches apart to aptimize fastening.

Also most soufit materials are installed with aluminum trim nails which would never hold up on a fish house.

The White Painted Aluminum Sheet (.040) is what I used and just fastened it with pole barn screws. The stuff is very light, very strong, and easy to work with. It's the same stuff that is used on utility trailers and you can get it at discount steel outlets.

Bottom, where do you acquire the fiberglass? Does it come on a roll that you cut to size and in colors other than white? Do you think it will get brittle and crack with either cold weather or UV exposure?

Where is the best buy on a RV type door like that?

Thanks for all the replies and recommendations.

fuzz, where did you acquire the aluminum panels and at what price? From what I have seen, they are about $70-$80 per sheet and limited colors.

Did you use a backer under the aluminum or apply directly to the studs? Thanks

No backer, just screwed them right to the studs and they've been holding up great. Strong stuff so it won't tear out the pole barn screws. I put 10 sheets on my 6.5 x 12 shack and total it was just under $600. I bought them from Discount Steel in Minneapolis. I just took a look and the price has gone up a bit since then (2 years ago).

.40 is the way to go with aluminum. The .025 which is very cheap in cost and too thin for a fish house, imo.

As far as attaching the aluminum panels to the house most guys use a PL style glue to glue the panels to the wall studs. You can use a bunch of c style clamps to hold the panel in place so the glue holds. This looks like a method that will take a bit longer than fastening it down but the finished produc looks great. Most of the higher end houses on the market are done this way. 3M makes a metal to metal tape you then use to secure your diamond plate material. I think I may also put some screws into the diamond plate, we'll see.

I plan to have the house I'm currently about to build spray foamed that that will also hold the aluminum sheets into place.

Garelick steel has the .025 aluminum sheets for cheap, not sure on anything thicker though.

Don't use .025. I used .032 and regret it. It has held up fine, but it is a bit wavier than I would like, especially after spray foam. I used .040 on a different house, and it looks MUCH better. Go with the .040.

PL Premium for holding the siding to the studs.

3M VHB for holding the sheets together at the seams and trim.

We have foamed a couple and we always have to shave the foam down on the inside because it expands to a certain degree so on the next house I will try and install the interior sheeting first then have the walls spryed and do the trim work on the out side. This will make the smell a little more bareable along with easier clean up. just a thought

Th e fiberglass comes in rolls. I asked before purchasing it about thing like getting brittle or cracking. The reply was its the same thing used on million dollar motor coaches. So I am confident its going to hold up on a fish house. You just have to search to find it. as far as cost.. it cost me $115.00 to do the whole house 14'x6'6" with a 3' vee.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
