Ice fishing reels

Any suggestion on reels. I need one for crappies and one for walleyes. Not looking to spend a fortune, just a solid reel that will work well in the cold temps.

Okuma Ignite or Stinson in the 10 series,really nice reels and the drag is smooth as silk. For the price I don't think you would be disappointed.

I've got some Shimano Sienna's (500 series) that are a very good reel for $30. Very smooth and seems to have a really good drag. We have about 8 of them and have not had one issue.

I think everyone will just have to list their favorites. LOL I would have to vote for Pflueger President, although the clearanced out Shimano Stradics would be awesome value.

I agree with you grizzly. For the price ($30) the sienna is a great ice reel. For open water rigging, casting etc. I might opt for something a little more high end, but solid construction and quality drag are enough for an ice reel.

I have very good luck with the Tica line and the Abu 100's.

Shimano, Tica, and Abu are all good reels. Pick any of these and you will be doing great. I picked up my Shimano 500 for 29.00 and the 1000 is the same price.

I use my open water reel. Just take it off my long pole, then put it on my short pole. Those micro reel pizz me off (I have big hands)

I bought a frabill spinning reel last year and am pretty happy with it. I also was at scheels the other day and bought a few of their ultralite reels as they were on clearance for 7.99. They have winter grease, infinite antireverse. For the price I couldn't go wrong. I have alot of older ice rods that are in need of better reels.

After having a blast catching a pike through the ice on the Frabill straightline reel, I wouldn't advise against looking into a fly reel for ice fishing. Having the fish take a dive and spin the handle right out of your grip is exhilarating.

I've got 3 of the Tica's and 2 of the Sienna's and both are very good reels. Two of the Tica's have the gold on them ($45) one is 5 years old and works flawless. The other Tica is the gun metal looking one ($50).

$50 seems like a lot for an ice reel until you see ones for $100+!!!

If one is looking for a good 5BB medium priced reel I would check out the Mitchell reels. For the money, they are a very good reel also.

I have done good with some of the gander and cabelas reels. You need to pick what works for you. I use some of them in the open water season.

Once you fish with a Shimano symetre or Sahara 500 or 1000 series you won't want to fish with anything else. Buttery smooth operation and drag. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
