Shimano Curado or Toro Revo Winch

That's in the eye of the beholder..

IMO, the curado is a little more bullet proof and higher quality construction and a little more solid feel, but the Toro winch will pull bigger baits easier and alot of guys are very happy with them. And the higher gear ratio will be faster. My buddy likes his 6.3-1 for double 10s. I got him a 5.3-1 when they were on clearance and he burndt it out in 2 trips, not sure why so I got him a 4.6-1. I use a saltist and I am seriously looking at a Tranx this winter but the price is stiff at $500+? and I need to see how big it is, it may be a low pro but it still looks big.

Won't go wrong either way and you may want to see what you can get a better deal on. Everyone has a different opinnion.

+1

Big Baits --- Toro

The rest of your stuff --- Curado

IMO... these reels serve two completely different purposes...

One is built for speed and the other is built for muscle.

The curado 300 will fish everything in your box until you get to 10's and baits with heavy drag. That is what the winch was built for.

Also agree 2 totaly different reels, Curado is good for most baits and can pull in DCG's just wont burn them, Winch pulls them eassily but also wont burn them and has to slow of line pick up for me when a fish is on resulting in lost fish.....Winch is also primarily for blades and possiblt big rubber, again with line pick up issues with rubber you miss fish... I love my Toro's but the Winch is not one in my stable but the Curado is....

What do people use to "burn" DCG? I know this has been beat to death, but I was under the impression that the "winch" painlessly burns the DCG's. Sorry to hijack the thread, but perhaps this will finalize my thoughts on what reel I want to buy.

Toro high speed is an option, that's what my buddy primary uses and he loves it, I use a Daiwa Saltist and I like it but I know I will break a spring sooner or later. (I think it is the clutch engagement spring??)Some guys like Calcutta 400 TE or 700. The new Shimano Tranx sounds awesome but for $500 it better be and another option is the Trinidad. I bought the Saltist because it was $150 and I put it on a 9' Bulldawg rod that I bought for $100 and it works well for the big stuff and the big blades.

If I were only going to buy 1 real and burning blades was my priority then I would get the Toro but since I have a few rods, I like the Saltist, after using that Saltist/Dawg rod, my calcutta 400/8'6 Lamiglass feels like a bass set up and it is a nice break for my hands and lower back.

A winch is a 4.6.1 gear ratio. This means the spool rotates 4.6 times per 1 full turn of the handle. That is very slow when compared to the curado.

A curado 300E is a 6.3.1 ratio. The spool rotates 6.3 times per 1 full turn of the handle.

With that said, you may think that the curado is the asnwer but the curado gear ratio is almost too high for 10's, the gear ratio works against you to a curtain extent. The spool turns to fast for the drag of the bait and eventually the reel will break down.

I would agree with 10,000 casts... I own a saltist but I will warn you that some have a difficult time casting it and it is on the heavier side. 6.1.1 ratio. I personaly like mine.

Probably one of the smoothest reels I have "burned" 10's with was a calcutta TE. 5.0.1. Still a work out though. and no matter what reel you use it will always be a work. Sucks!

The winch doesn't "burn" anything. The definition of a winch is slow, pulling power. I suppose you can reel faster, but you'd tire yourself out pretty fast trying to "burn" with it. Gotta go with a saltwater reel for that (trinidad, saltist, etc).

If you're looking for a smaller, non-saltwater style reel for 10's I recommend the Diawa Luna. I have Curados, TEs, Trinidads, Saltist etc and the Luna is pretty much the easiest for big blades.

I wouldn't do to much burning either, after viewing hundreds of musky catches on dcg's I'm not sure burning them was the why they were active, these lures weren't really burned, but retrieved in optimal conditions on great spots on some of our great waters. Get a calcutta, you'll be good to go, I went through 3 abu's in 4 years and now with the calcutta I'm still chucking with it 5 years later and it sounds like new which means there's hardly any sound at all and have boated maybe 40 fish with it so in the long run.........many are caught up in burning it and many a video says burn it and if you watch how fast they turn the handle it isn't being burned or they'll edit in a few super fast retrieves making you think they're doing that all day, they must be in great shape on those 90 degree days and they aint sweatin lol.

IF your looking for a new reel, check out the shimano Tranx. New this year, comes in a highspeed and a "winch" slower gear ratio model also. Read lots of reviews and looks like a solid reel. I will have one on order very soon. I own the winch and its great for large hard pulling baits, but is slow. I do like the reel and think it is a good quality and serves it purpose.
