Smart Phone GPS?

I noticed on the gear thread that some of you are using the smart phone navionics app as a gps. How well does it work? Does it function without 3g coverage? Any other pros, or cons? I am quite interested to hear how this works!!

I have it and it works very well. GPS has proven decently accurate. Once the app is downloaded then you can load the maps and they stay resident on your phone so you can use the app without cell coverage using just the stand alone GPS. You can either pick to have the navionics U.S or U.S./Canada. In my opinion its worth every penney and a few more. I also have the My Tracks app on the phone and between the 2 no longer use my handheld GPS. I still bring it as a backup. Let me know if you want to know more about it id be glad to help.

Best 20 bucks spent -- i went with us lakes north and yes it includes LOW. no additioanl cost -- the only gripe i have is the numbers for depth are small (i'm getting up there where i need cheater glasses - which i don't bring ice fishing - yet) maybe that's just my phone (I have the Incredible) -- you won't be dissapointed - i'm guessing you, like many will be done using your handheld devices after you get this loaded on your phone.

Are Lake of the Woods, and Rainy lake/river included on the U.S. app? do you have to pay for each chart? is there anything you dont like about it?

The U.S. parts of it are included in the U.S. version. If you get the U.S./canada version it includes all of the continental U.S. as well as Canada, Alaska, Hawaii. Once you download the app all the maps are included you just download them and off you go. all the map data is stored to your phone and you dont need cell service to use it. it works with the stand alone GPS .

I bought a Droid mainly for the purpose of using Navionics lake maps. I haven't even hooked up phone service to the phone yet and may not because I like my old phone. I downloaded Navionics several weeks ago and have played around with it. Like others have said you can't go wrong for 10 bucks!!

I have both the Navionics App as well as the H2Oc. I have only tested the two units side by side on Lake Pepin. I found that on the river that the H2Oc depth was closer on the H2O. I'm not sure if my finding could be skewed being the river is always changing. Another thing I noticed is you can zoom in way closer on the H2O than the droid for pin point accuracy of your position.

One thing I have been messing around with is Google maps and saving locations. Once your location has been found, if you touch your icon marker an option box will come up. From there you will have the option to send your location to others. What I have been doing is selecting text message...title your spot (ex: "20ft, Jumbo Perch") and sending the text message to myself. In your text message you will have a running log of all your locations. The text messages latitude and longitude are linked to the navigation feature on your phone to get back to your favorite spot.

confused...sorry!!!

Not quite, the new Navionics maps on smart phones are download by choice. Meaning its no longer stored on phone unless you choose to pre-load the area maps to save space. The iPhone version has done this for over a year and now just recently updates to Android version with same features. So if you have no access to wireless data make sure you preload the maps first before heading out.

Older Navionics Apps may no longer be available on your App Store to purchase but generally should be able to be re-downloaded even if you wipe your phone or accidently deleted from your purchased history.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
