Navionics MARINE AND LAKES for Android

Recommended Posts

Navionics has a new program out: MARINE AND LAKES. Kind of the same as the previous program but has several new things as well. Have you tried it? What is working for you and what isn't?

On the plus side:

> Pinch to zoom

> Crosshairs pointer.

> 9 bucks for entire USA

> 13 bucks for USA and Canada

> goofy red squares replaced by a "little" better basemap.

> rotates when you rotate the phone

On the negative side:

> It is tedious to download large areas (like the whole country)one little piece at a time.

> If you do the above it eats up a lot of space

> It seems like battery life is better if you download smaller areas (I just tried MN in 5 separate downloads to make the maps smaller and it seems to help).

> It seems like some of the lakes that had updated charts are now more like standard DNR Maps (Bald Eagle for one). Not sure on that...

> There may be another way but I had to uninstall/delete Navionics folder/re-install to remove maps. It seems like there should be a better way...

Apparently our old programs are no longer available, not being updated, will probably be wiped off your phone if you update the OS. More info here: Android Navionics

PLEASE use the other thread to discuss the issues with the old program so we can use this thread to sort out the new one.

Anyone else using MARINE and LAKES?

Yep, got it just a little bit after it came out. Love it! And IMO it's quite a bit better than the previous version.

I actually really like this feature. Being able to select and download the specific areas you fish is awesome. No need to download lakes and states I will never fish and waste space on the phone. And if I do decide to go somewhere different or new just select the area I'm going to and it downloads automatically.

Navionics really did their homework with this new app.

Oh, and with each update they add more and more HD lakes, now almost every lake I fish on a consistent basis is atleast 3ft contours.

I have to agree, being able to download only what you need/want is a big plus. Takes up less space on the SD card, display seems to use less power when using smaller map sections.

I tend to be the curious sort though and like to check out the places other guys are talking about. The only problem I've run into with that is dumping the map sections after you get done with them. I hope they get that fixed in an upcoming release.

I was checking out the Vermillion map this morning and the section I was looking is in 5ft contours. I thought the last version was in 3ft or better. Hmmm...

I like the new buttons, especially the GPS button. So much easier to get back to GPs-centered after scrolling around.

I installed the new ap, then removed it because the old version (which I still have) has better maps of Voyageurs park lakes. I don't understand why that should be the case, but the new ,aps of that area are horrible. Don't even show contours. They look like the old park DNR maps. What gives? I have the new ap on my iPad and it is awesome there.

Just looked and you are right, comparing them side by side and it is a HUGE difference. Not even a contour line anywhere on them. Just wondering, did you download the US only version like me or US/Canada version?

I will be sending an Email to them shortly regarding this issue.

I have USA and Canada. VNP lakes don't have contour lines.

Edit: Well, some have a couple of lines but mostly scattered numbers everywhere...

Thank you for that information! I was thinking maybe they didn't want to split up the lakes to US side Canada side and force you to buy US/Canada app. But obviously they have overlooked something in the new app.

Hopefully they respond to the emails

Well, for the extra 3 or 4 bucks I couldn't see not getting canada too. The lakes that seem really bad are in vnp. north and south of that are somewhat better. I'm not finding many that I would call great.

My experience with the old app was that the maps looked real good but were not especially accurate. Many of the new maps look like USGS maps from the 60's. It will be interesting to see if they are more accurate...

OKAY, now I'm irritated! Just noticed they also removed the HD contours from Prior Lake. The first App had the HD contours. And another email goes off to Navionics...

:edit:

Nevermind, I just redownloaded the lake and force stopped the app and now is in HD.

Well, my first FF with GPS is on the way. It's a bird so apparently LM and Navniks will work. If this is what I can expect from Navniks you can bet I'll go with LM map chip...

not impressed so far

Edit: not impressed with the MAPS so far. I think the interface is a lot better than the previous version.

You did what? Prior on mine is 5' contour lines...

I now have 1' Contour lines, just like the previous app.

I went into the settings and selected download map, drug the box around Prior and hit download. It downloaded but made the map all pixelated, so I went into my phones App manager found found the Navionics App and selected Force Close. It will completely shut down the app and let it clear wherever it's hanging up. Opened it back up and now is working well.

Just got their response..

Quote:
Please be advised that the previous Lakes: US North included CHS Data. Due to recent agreements with the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Navionics is currently conducting updates for Canadian cartography. At this time CHS has not made data available to Navionics for these areas.

If you need additional information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Best regards,

Navionics Mobile Team

Besides, that males no sense because the iPad app has the good maps. Weirdness going on here.

Very weird! Why would issues with CHS have ANYTHING to do with maps here in metro area? (Bald Eagle for instance) Last I heard this is still the USA...

Whaddya suppose the copyrights they are REALLY having trouble with are with Lakemaster??? (now that Johnson Outdoors bought LM) Makes a lot more sense to me...
