New xbox

So I got another xbox. It works great, so far. Anyhow, anytime it gets shut off, the rest of the house looses internet. Then I need to reset the router, and cable box every time I shut off the xbox. Why? What can I do to stop this?

Couple things to check. Is DMZ enabled on your router & do you know how to forward ports???

Get in the admin portion of your router and check to see if DMZ is enabled. If it isn't try that. If that doesn't fix it you will need to do some port forwarding.

here are the settings as follows...

XBL requires the following ports to be open:

Port 88 (UDP)

Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)

Port 53 (UDP and TCP)

Port 80 (TCP)

Let me know if this helps or you need help doing this. I can probably help you over the phone Scott.

Scott, I didn't get around to calling you last night as I was busy with a few things.

Couple things when you are in the MW3 party portion of your xbox or ps3. What does your nat type say? Open? Moderate? Strict?

I will need to know that and your router model number and brand.

Then I can help yah.Ill try to give you a call tonight.

Cisco bought out Linksys. Far from their business class stuff. But I have had good luck with mine and the stuff I have setup for others. Biggest things is occasionally having to upgrade firmware. My linksys has been up and running for over 3 months with no issues at all.

I will say this, their product is made cheaply, and they have many problems, but the best part is, their customer support is pretty much the worst I have ever dealt with, and I have dealt with Lowrance before, and Cysco support for the Lynksys routers has them beaten by far for terribleness. So other then having routers that are cheaply made, a product that has many issue, and have the worst customer support I have ever dealt with. I guess their product is ok. smirk

These home routers are built cheap, they have to be no one would pay the price of an actual router. An actual entry level Cisco router is going start out at about $1500 bucks and believe me that is nothing fancy and the price goes up from there. Expect to pay about 20% of the purchase price for a service contract, but I will tell you call and you get top notch service. I have dealt with other vendors on business class routers and Cisco is the best by far.

So want some great service pony up the $$$ and buy a real router wink

I think there could be a happy medium somewhere. I dont need 50+ ports to supply half my town with internet, I need a good wireless router, to give me good reception in my house, without issues. And if there is an issue, have some one help me, in ENGLISH, in less then 60+ hours of phone time trying to get it figured out. Lets not forget, if the router is 366 days old by the time they figure out it is bad, they will continue to help you out for a small fee of $49 for 30 days on this one issue. But good luck getting your issue fixed in less then 30 days. Then when they do actually admit there is a problem with the router, for a measly $39 they will exchange it for you, if you pay to ship it to them, and back, of couse it is automatically billed on to the $39 exchange fee, for $20 each way. So when your all said and done, you have more into the refurbished router, then a new one would have costed. All while not having internet for about 3 months. Ofcourse I bought a Netgear to use the day my system went down, so I had that until we got the Linksys figured out.

All I am going to say is you get what you pay for. A router with 50 ports, probably gonna cost ya close to $20,000 wink

These little home routers we pay $50 for actually do quite a bit for what you pay for. In the IT world you rarely get to talk to someone who really speaks English, ya just gotta hope the the guy on the other side knows a little about what he is supporting.

This stuff is no different that a mechanic buying his tools. He probably is not going to shop at wally world for tools and if he does buy something there he is going to know it is going to cause him problems and is going be pretty much just disposable.

I prefer linksys/cisco products over other brands. I have never had any problems with any of them. Usually firmware updates seem to fix most problems.

Scott whats the status on this ???

If we cant get it to work, they do sell gaming routers specifically designed for gaming.

I dont know, I havent done anything on it yet. I have been busy working out in the garage lately. I have noticed that the last few times the Xbox was shut off, it didnt cut internet to anything else, so it hasnt bothered me since.

You'd think right??? I actually ordered 2 base model 24port Cisco gigabit switches for a client a few months back. When they arrived from the distributor I opened the boxes and they were branded Linksys. I had to get an RMA on them as I wasnt delivering these to my client with Linksys branded all over them.

Anyway...for any of you guys who support people like Scott over the phone...here is a handy tool for walking users step by step over the phone through their linksys firmware.

All Linksys UIs

    • Power output is:  amps x volts = watts   If your charger is pushing 10amp at 12 volt: 12 x 10 = 120 watts.  2 banks = 240 watts.   240 watts / 120v at your outlet = 2 amp.   Efficiency isn't 100% so it's gonna be more than 2 amp on your garage circuit, but maybe like 2.4 amps.     I think.... It's been a while, LOL.  Either way 20amps output on a charger for a 12v battery isn't the same as pulling 20amps off your garage circuit.
    • Wanderer, thank you. I did look at the breakers for my garage/outside outlets and they are 20 amp.  I reached out to the company that makes dual pro chargers with the question and this is the reply I received.:     Thank you for reaching out to us here at PCS. The Sportsman series charger, although rated ay 10 amps per bank, draws only 5 amps from AC when all banks are charging. As the Professional series which provides 15 amps per bank, has a maximum AC draw of 7.5 amps with all banks charging.
    • That’s an interesting point.  While I understand how Amps work, I can’t say I’m fully versed in the draw of modern on board chargers.   By modern code, outdoor and outbuilding outlets should be 20 Amp.  If your outside or garage outlets are 15 Amp, they’re undersized.  But that is quite possible if the garage was built before that code became enforced.   With heavy use, you may not be able to keep up on daily charging without the 10 Amp per channel charger, however that’s with very aggressive use for consecutive days.  On our June muskie trip we run up to 15 hours a day for up to 7 days on a 24V Ulterra and by mid week we’re starting to see the batteries not reach full charge.  That’s a lot of bank running at nearly 2 mph on windy shores.   We charge at a dock with up to 6 boats per dock plugged in - some with 36 volt systems.  Now I’m not sure if all the outlets are on a dedicated circuit but I’m betting they aren’t.  But they’re all 20A outlets with a lot of draw on them.  At max draw, they’re not keeping up but also not tripping the breakers.   What I’m saying, without a technical review is: you’re probably fine either way.  You probably won’t tax your batteries so much that they can’t recover on a 5 Amp per channel overnight charge and a 10Amp per channel charger probably won’t be too much to plug into your 15A outlet - if it really is a 15A.  If you’re sure, you’re sure, but I would double check if you’re not 100%.
