a big upset on the trap line

Recommended Posts

got home from church today and I could hear a scream coming from the woods/my trapline. turns out the neighbor pup decided fox lure scent was interesting and got her front left paw stuck in the trap. i let her out and she ran home quickly.

what does a guy do? call the neighbors?

(it's probably a 5+ year old Terrier, that was roaming 1/2 mile from it's house)

Dogs are tough. I try to stay away from land with dogs or call anybody with dogs before I start trapping close to them. As for now you should call and let them know what happened.Granted the dog was roaming they need to know that also. I'm lucky up here as a lot of woods and not many houses.

Yep and maybe move the "Trap line" Out of the neighborhood so some kids aren't the next in them if you have them setup so close to home? confused

Leech, the traps I use are very small. This dog is about half the size of a fox, and there are no neighbor kids around. The same dog has ruined numerous deer hunts for me.

Jack,

I'm not sure there's one good answer for this question. If you know for sure who the neibor is and think they're somewhat reasonable, you could maybe call and let them know that you've seen the dog numerous times on your property and that you have traps out and just don't want anything to happen to it and see how they respond. If they say there sorry and they'll keep it leashed I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and hope

it doesn't happen agian. If it ends up that it's your fault, I wouldn't argue with them but be polite and leave and not bother them agian with the problem.

The problem is once the dog starts roaming or chasing it's going to be hard to break them of this if the owner doesn't follow through and correct it. Same goes for the guy that owns the pitbull. They probably can be good dogs but we all know what happens when they're taught to be aggressive. Same for the neiborhood bully. If mom and dad don't correct bad behavior and let them know what's right and wrong how is the kid supposed to know. It's unfortunate but some people shouldn't have kids or dogs. Good luck and hope it turns out well for you.

Unfortunately, I can't call the guy and tell him, because he has a ridiculous temper! I'm sure their dog will be fine, and I highly doubt it will ever roam again after "losing" (maybe breaking?) a leg to a trap.

On a funny note, I caught a crow in a trap baited with a pheasant carcass. It must have landed directly on the trap, otherwise it wouldn't have set it off.

thanks guys.

For one thing i would not have posted this on an open forum for antis to see. Second of all it is illegel to have exposed bait in MN. So where was the pheasant carcass again? Some people are so quick to post dumb things. I think you are giving trappers a bad name right now. I wish you could delete this whole post.

Well I wouldn't do anything, you did what you could and let it out. Unless that dog is dumb it won't be back in that trap. I have trapped my lab only once. And to be honest it was a good thing as now she knows what happens and doesn't go near my traps. I take her with all the time and I never worry about her getting caught, and the same for other peoples traps.

If it happens again call the warden and he will take care of the roaming dog.

I caught our dog once when I was younger the dog was fine lived many years after without any problems 9lb dog in a #2 coil. I wouldn't worry about it, these things happen. If your being legal with your sets and trapping on property that you have rights to trap, dust it off and if you trap long enuff and it will happen. As far as being accused of not making legal sets with visable bait that's only something that you know and in my opinion there could be some "Anti's" giving you a lashing rather than trying to help you with your situation. Keep trapping and don't be afraid to voice your experiences, but beware that many eye's watch trappers that would like to see it gone, trapping needs positive voices heard. If your not, try to be active in the state trapper's association from when I got my first card to now it has deffinatly made me feel that I'm a better trapper and more informed trapper on the social veiws of the sport. Good Luck out there!!
