Strange thing happened the other day.

While grouse hunting we moved two rooster pheasants in the middle, and I mean middle of the woods. They were living in perfect grouse habitat, low, thick cover. Never seen it before, anyone else? There is agriculture around there but they had to be at least 1/2 mile from it.

We saw a rooster in the middle of Beltrami Island state forest one year up by LOW. I would be pretty sure it was a game farm escapee though as a game farm is about 20 miles away. Very weird to see. I had my bow with me and put the 2nd arrow thru it and it flew away and couldn't find it.

Weird, maybe it was hunting pressure?

I had the kids out early doe season a few years ago. We were all in a turkey blind in the woods next to ag and grassland. At sunrise we noticed quite a commotion, two roosters fighting. They thrashed around for a good five minutes. When they quit one flew all the way to the top of a popple and stayed there for half an hour. Probably licking his wounds. When he came down he made his way within 20 feet us. Quite an experience for the kids.

I have seen roosters in the middle of the woods before, not very often, but I am sure they were released birds of some type whether it be a game farm or personal use. They were DUMB!!! I walked to within 5 feet of one and it never moved. I supposed it wasnt used to seeing a human and I dont really look like sasquatch so it was unsure what to make of me.

Around Aitkin we used to add roosters to the bag while out grouse hunting more often than a person would think. They'd flush from thickets, middle of the woods, and edges we'd walk. We also shoot pheasants while up hunting sharptail, in NW MN. All of them were pen-raised birds...
