Tom7227
My 14 1/2 year old Brit has some sort of mites on his legs and they are swollen. The vet gave me some Ivermectin, prednisone and an antibioitic to try. Her parting words were something to the effect that if they don't work it means his immune system is shot and that it 'may be time to look to alternatives' clearly meaning putting the dog down.Jake has lost about 10 lbs in the past year or so. Oddly he seems more lively than he has been for quite a while actually playing a bit with the 4 year old Brit. he stumbles some but the back legs still work and he can walk and trot pretty well.I don't want to put him down yet but I also don't want to make things really bad for him before I do.Any thoughts on how long he has to go or the likelihood of the meds taking care of the mites and swelling? Thanks for your time.Tom
LABS4ME
I'm a firm believer the dog 'always tells you'. You can see it in their eyes when the fire goes out... and the way they hold themselves is obvious. It's a tough decision when they aren't 'quite' ready, but you can see their quality of life erode. I would certainly give these meds some time as long as he is spirited. Then maybe one other opinion if you're not sure if it is time....Good Luck w/ your decision! Never an easy answer...Ken
reinhard1
our two dogs passed 6 months apart at almost 15 years. i could see the signs of ageing but everything came about quick at the end. i hope you have some more time and the meds work for your very much loved dog. you take good care of your dogs. 14 and a half is doing very well. giving them love is just as important as giving them proper food and care if not more. i wish you the best. setterguy
My criteria has always been, when life becomes a hassle. When its a hassle to get up and go out, to eat, to move around etc. Try the meds, at least try and make him comfortable.
