now you don't have time to get it done but you can get an apprentice license for this year so he can go i just went thru this last week called the dnr in st paul and for the answer there is a fee for it I believe it was 3 or 5 buck at least my daughter can hunt and i'm not the worst dad ever cause that is how i was feeling when i realized that 12 was the magic age

MT has it correct. A 12 yr old would require a firearms safety card to buy their own license and hunt. However there is the Hunter Apprentice card which allows people to hunt for a year (I think they just extended it to two yrs) on the apprentice card to see if they like hunting before they need to get their FAS card.

Then a 12yr old has to get a deer license and remain in direct contact with an adult during the hunt.

Congrats on introducing a child to hunting.
