Aging anterless Deer

Recommended Posts

I have seen many threads where people ask to identify the age of the deer. Often it is bucks. I look through those threads and try to understand the differences, but i'm not confident.

I've got very little understanding of what key characteristics help identify a deer's age prior to the shot. If there is a good pictoral resource that someone can link me to, or provide some description of what to look for in older deer i would greatly appreciate it.

I'd like to be a able to age a doe prior to the shot, to ensure I'm harvesting mature does. Pictures would be great. Young deer to Older deer. What are the most obvious differences.

Thanks a bunch.

They have some good reference materials through the QDM site that have pictures you can use for reference that can be ordered. Does can be tough when alone as far as judging size but some of the characteristics to look at are similar with bucks. Does the deer look darker, have a sway back or enlarged brisket area, look closely at the head and neck, the muscles in the neck of a mature doe will be more defined then a younger doe.
