Unfortunately havn't made it up to the land yet this year but was wondering if anyone has been up in the Brimson area. Wobbler have you been up there lately? Curious to see if what the wolves are like up there this year. I will be heading up there the weekend of 10/22 to do some work. Unfortunatley my buddy is getting married on OPENING WEEKEND!!! I couldn't believe it either. Needless to say, my opening weekend will be 11/12. Hoping will hit the rut in it's prime this year.

4 weeks and counting. Can't wait! Tis the season where I find myself day dreaming of sitting in a stand.

I hunt the north part of 122. The place I stay at said wolves are about the same.

What kind of a buddy gets married on opening weekend?! Just kidding! My now wife originally set our wedding date for fishing opener! I told he she had to change it or I might not even show up, much less my friends! She changed it. I tell everyone opener of deer season is a religious holiday I don't miss. In fact, I retired this year and I will be up hunting for 8 days. Really looking forward to it.

Thanks for the update Bruce. My buddy has heard it from a number of us smile Congrats on retirement! I am waiting for the day to spend an extended period of time up there.... Only 20 more years to go or unless I win the powerball. whichever comes first smile

Good luck to you.

Dustin

ddp,

Nice to hear from you! I am in the same boat as you ddp. My dad is finally retired so I get daily reports how it is up there usually. I hope someday we get to enjoy it like that. I figured being almost 39 I probably have 30 years left! As far as your buddy wow poor planning on his part. If he would have been like me I got married the weekend BEFORE opener. Make the wife happy then gone for 9 days!!!

I was up a few weeks ago and I did see plenty of fresh wolf sign. While it was pretty dry and it was tough to see tracks, a fresh pile of you know what with deer hair in it laying on the roads and trails told me they are around. It must be a territorial thing as I always seem to find that stuff right in the middle or trails or roads. We also found a few rubs and 1 scrape otherwise no buck sign. Last year we saw lots of sign by now. I know it has been unseasonably warm but you would think deer would be moving here soon. Hopefully the cameras have some pics. Heading up there next Tuesday through Sunday for some grouse hunting and deer stand prep work during MEA. I will give you a fresh report then. Bruce I hunt the north half as well of 122. I expect a few more hunters around this year as we can shoot 2 and nobody north or east of us can do that!

One of the areas that I've been frequenting for bow is NE of Brimson, towards Finland. I've seen signs of wolves, but I've actually seen more 'yotes than wolves, and more than I've seen in the past couple of years. I'm hearing the wolves at night though...

ddp,

I was up there from Wednesday to Sunday. While I did not see any wolf sign or hear them the woods was awfully quiet and not even a squirrel made a peep. Hardly any rubs and only 1 scrape which in years past our woods is tore up by now. The trail cameras had lots of little bucks (3 different spikers, a 4 pointer and 5 pointer which is encouraging sign of a good crop of 1 and 1/2 year olds) and only 1 shooter at our camp. No wolves in the cameras which we put out mid September (5 of them). I sure hope in 2 weeks the bucks start acting like the rut is coming! I have never in all my years of hunting have seen such little sign and we only harvested 1 buck last year on our land.

Wobbs,

I hear ya... We were up there last weekend and noticed little sign as well. just one big rub... i hope from the guy in my avitar smile we came out of the woods saturday just as it was getting dark and looked down the road and there they were. 3 wolves running down the road towards us. They came within 200 yards and lost the game of chicken and whistled... they took off into the woods. Supprised they came that close. Large and scrawney sons of a guns. Maybe the delay of my opener will work afterall with how little sign there is up there.

As always, if you drive by the corner, feel free to stop and have a beverage of your choice.

Dustin

ddp,

I saw someone hit a 4 pointer between where you hunt and our road last weekend. My brother is up there today and said he has seen a few more rubs and scrapes since the weekend so that sounds encouraging! Yes those wolves will walk up right to you and I agree the last set I saw looked like all legs and hair. Maybe the eating is not so good lately!
