redhooks
Found some nice slabs in the Ely area last thursday the 12th shallow in the pencil reeds. I caught 8 crappies all around 13 inches, 2 were on bobber and minnow and the other 6 on my 5 wt flyrod w/ leech imitator and yellow maribou jig. Dark colored fish and a fun time in the rain-lilacs are still in bloom up there but are all gone here in Grand Rapids. Good luck to all who venture!redhooks
CrappieJohn
Red...How are the bugs up there...we may be doing the cabin the end on the month to mow and I'd like to know what sort of body armor I'll need. We had a broken spawn here this spring- started, stopped, started again- and really sort of put a new twist in the things for us. It was interesting to say the least. The fish near home here have gone to deep water or the main lake. I'll leave'm go for a couple weeks now and let the water heat up and put down a solid thermocline and then go hunt'em down again. Good fishing to ya and thanks in advance for any bug reports you may have.------------------Sure life happens- why wait....The Crapster....good fishing guys! protrapper
Tom,I am up in the Grand Marais area, same as Ely pretty much. Bring you bug spray. The black flies are crazy, and the skeeters are out. The flies are not out in the boat though but the skeeters are... No ticks though...
Guest
Are the black flies as bad as they were last year? I heard that last year was unusually bad due to some 10-year theory about worms and flies and who knows what else in the cycle of life...The flies were so bad where we were last year that you could not sit outside at any point during the day (unless you were fishing, of course) as the black flies would just be bouncing off you all over the place. protrapper
There about the same as last year. Bad during the morning and afternoon. They go away in the eveing.
redhooks
The bug reports were accurate-skeeters not bad yet, no-see-ums getting bad and in some locations (Grand Marais)the big black friendly flies are getting plentiful- they don't bite but can get annoying, hope they take care of all the tent caterpillars! I have found a few ticks but not as many as past years. I haven't had to put on bugdope yet but I do eat alot of garlic and think that really helps. Good luck to all who venture! redhooks hey Protrapper-do you know Ethyl or Bear up there in GM? we were out on GitcheeGumee last weekend and caught a few deep lakers. CrappieJohn
Redhooks....The cabin trip will not be required....other family going up to mow the two foot of grass this time, thank God. You mentioned that "tent" word. The last two years there were so many there at the cabin that it stunk from rotting bugs. Are they bad again? And ticks...we had them already in our early May trip...lots of them. I got them on me while mowing with the John Deere! And chiggers! As much as I look forward to our trips up to Two Harbors, I guess I am not going to miss this one. Seems that if there is going to be a bug issue, it happens big time about now. ------------------Sure life happens- why wait....The Crapster....good fishing guys! redhooks
Hey CrappieTom- yeah there are a few of those F.T.Caterpillers up in the Grand Marais area as well as some in Ely and here in Grand Rapids-they are definetly on the downswing from the past 2 years but there is enough around to notice hiding in boats on vehicles and on clothes-I even flicked a couple into superior wondering if any fish would pick them up and then probably spit them back out .LoL Good to hear you have help taking care of the cabin so you have more time to fish the next time your up-I'm looking forward to longlining lakers in august on the big lake. Here's to the good life-tightlines and screamin drags!!! redhooks
