Kids in a portable?

sparetime

Recommended Posts

Last year I took my kids out in a Clam 5600 suitcase style shack. It’s the older version, but overall not much different size wise than the newer models. The kids are 6 and 5, and the shack seemed to work ok. It was a little cramped, I had them sit on one side and I sat on the other, the ridge didn’t allow me to sit between them, which would be nice for helping bait hooks, reel in fish, keep the peace, etc.

I was thinking of getting a larger flip over with a bench seat, but I am a little more concerned with having the holes between the seat and the door. I don’t know if a leg going in a hole is more of a risk in the flip over style vs. the suitcase style or not. The bench seat would allow me to sit between them.

Anyone else taking younger kids out in a portable? What works for you?

I have a Yukon that I take my two boys out in. I put a 5 gallon bucket (with seat fusion) between the two swivel seats. Never had much trouble with the holes being in the way. Not sure what size auger you use, but mine is an 8 inch. I also don't let them get up and go out 50 times while we are fishing. Had more problems with them stepping in older holes left by others than the ones in the shack.

It's a little tight. The biggest problem is when someone catches a fish, the lines tend to get tangled. Other than that, it works pretty well.

I got a hub, the open floor plan allows for the best positioning of the holes, heater, and him. Not the best durability/warmth wise and a pain on windy days, but also have a perm. and just use the porty for short trips from there. As, with anything there is always a trade off. My gut tells me the bench would be better, have had a few trips cut short by Jr. stepping in the hole, but part of fishing with kids smile Like DaSwede mentioned, just use a smaller bit. With two of them, good luck and have fun grin

When I take kids out I use the bigger Otter with the bench seat. Nice thing with the Otter is the storm flap lets me just flip it up to let them out the without stepping over the holes or heater and I just flip it back down once back in. No need for banking. If you just put in the back support the Otter will stay open at half mast allowing you to just give it a flip and not worry about it.

I have a Trap Voyager and haven't had a problem with stepping in the holes. I have three boat seats in it and the way the door works you can zip it from either side. I use 8" holes and we drill 3 1 for each of us. The only complaint I have is loading it into the truck. I'm 6'3" and work for a living and had a hard time loading it until the boys got big enough to help. Now their getting to big to go (to many other things going and graduating) and I'm trying to load it myself again and getting older. I do like that there is a bar above where my heater sits to shove wet gloves and mittens to dry them.

My son and I have been using the Clam Command Post Thermal the last couple years and it's by far the most cost-productive option I've come across ($449 is tough to beat!)...

JackDadClam.jpg

We have a TON of room for fishing and other activities. I've even had 6 people in there fishing comfortably. My brother-in-law brings his two boys all the time and we have a blast fishing inside of it! Very warm and easy to set up. We put a couple of the Hub Wall Shelves up to store misc items and life is good smile

It's a full-thermal option that is 6x12 once setup. Two zipper doors makes for easy access no matter where people are fishing (I zip it shut from the bottom up and throw the boys on one side that way they can't run out smile ). We've learned in recent years that sometimes half of the shelter is designated to "play area" instead of fishing... this allows the adults more time to fish (we also don't punch holes is the "play area" so that no one gets wet wink ).

A lot of reasons to go with the Clam Command Post Thermal and for the person looking to house a group of people--or just a play area--then this is an excellent option!

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
