02 F150 cruise control

Recommended Posts

If the horn works than we eliminated one fuse. There are two other fuses in the central fuse block. I show #5 and #15 (15amp and 5 amp). If those are good check the switch on the master cylinder. the white/yellow wire should have power, red/light green goes to the cruise servo brake input, and the black/pink is ground. Not sure if this had the recall update for this switch. if it did there will be another inline fuse in the updated harness. if there is no power and there is an updated harness check the fuse in the harness.

If there is power than I think the switch is normally open until it sees brake pressure then it closes. Either 4WE or Macgyver will confirm this. On the switch itself, there should normally be continuity between the black/pink and the red/light green wires. There should be no continuity between the white/yellow and the red/light green unless the brake pedal is depressed. Normally when the switches are bad they will be covered in brake fluid.

lOOKS LIKE THE BRAKE SWITCH IS NORMALLY OPEN, AND THE PRESSURE SWITCH IS NORMALLY CLOSED. Check the pressure switch on the master cylinder to see if there is brake fluid swwping into the sensor, and electrical connector.

The cruise deactivation switch/ Brake pressure switch is screwed into the top front of the master cylinder, easy to see, and to get at. Just unplug the electrical connector and see if there is brake fluid in the wiring connector, if there is, go to the dealer and get the kit, which consists of a new sensor, and a small pigtail. Cost is under $20, and it will take you about 10 minutes to replace.

Tom,

Yes, there was a recall for that year truck. You will want to check it out as the cruise control module has started on fire in a few trucks. I am sure you will be able to check with any Ford dealer to see if this has been done on your truck.

I also just brought my 01 F150 in for the gas tank strap recall. The straps are rusting out and the gas tank hits the road. You might want to check and see if you are in that recall too when you go in.

Had an interesting experience.

Went to Herb's place at 61 and E. Asked for the part that was the cruise thing that sat on top of the brake cylinder. Parts guy looked it up and said it was $100. I said that I thought it was part of a recall and so another part guy suggested that I go over to the service area and check with them.

Drove over and two service guys came over. One was pretty young and the other was maybe early 40's. Popped the hood and the older guy right away said that the repair had been made. Took off some tape and confirmed that the fuse was good. He said that part didn't have anything to do with the cruise control. The younger guy must have said 5 times that I needed to get it fixed because the brake fluid is highly flamable and it was dripping onto the exhaust manifold. I told them that the parts guy said the part was $100. I asked one of them to check and see if that was right and the older guy called the parts department and was told that the part was $24.95.

Went back to the parts building. The other parts guy waited on me, went and got the part and charged me $18.45. The other guy left the area and the guy who was waiting on me said he knew the first guy was wrong but he couldn't say anthing because he had to work with the guy. He said that it probably will fix the cruise and gave the advice consistent with what I had been given here at FM.

When I go to get my straps checked I'll probably stay away from E and 61.

If you post your vin number i can check on the fuel tank strap recall.

"CERTAIN 1997 THROUGH 2003 MODEL YEAR F-150, 2004 MODEL YEAR F-150

HERITAGE, 1997 THROUGH 1999 MODEL YEAR F-250 LIGHT DUTY, AND 2002

THROUGH 2003 MODEL YEAR BLACKWOOD VEHICLES OPERATED IN

CORROSION STATES — FUEL TANK STRAP INSPECTION AND REPAIR "

RECALL 11s21

If you have a skid plate below your tank your ok for now, but still needs to be looked at, if you don't Ford is going to reinforce your existing straps or replace them if they are cracked or perforated, we are also seeing some weeping gas tanks. That's a whole new thing then.

I put in the $18.50 part and all is well. I was surprised at how corroded the bottom of the old sensor was. I didn't think that brake fluid was corrosive.

John, I sent you a private message with my VIN.

Thanks all for the help. Fast, accurate info from FM and foolishness and time wasting at the dealer.
